Rotary cooler

A sectional cooler is a type of liquid cooled rotary drum cooler used for continuous processes in chemical engineering. [1] Sectional coolers consist of a rotating cylinder ("drum" or "shell"), a drive unit and a support structure. At each end of the drum there are stationary chutes for material feed and outlet. Depending on the size of the cooler the drum is pivoted on a shaft running through its axis, or is supported on running treads or external ring gears. The interior of the drum consists of several wedge-shaped chambers arranged around a central hollow shaft. This arrangement is completely surrounded by a jacket of water. In the wedge-shaped chambers are angled fins or shovels which move material through the cooler as the drum is rotated. [2]

Function

Sectional coolers work by indirectly cooling the material passing through them with water. [3] The water enters the cooler and reaches the space between the wedge-shaped chambers through the central hollow shaft, circulates between and around the chambers then leaves the cooler. The material to be cooled usually falls into the feed chute directly from another machine. As the drum rotates, the fins on the inside faces of the wedge-shaped sections convey the material to other end of the cooler. The rotation causes a constant mixing of the product in the chambers, providing good heat transfer and increasing efficiency. Sectional coolers can be rotated by chains, gears or by friction drive onto the drum itself.

Applications

Any free flowing bulk material can be cooled in a sectional cooler. They are often found after rotary kilns in calcination or other similar processes. [4] The purpose of sectional coolers is usually to reduce the material temperature enough that it can be handled with other machines such as conveyor belts and mills. Often the cooling itself is also an important part in the production process. Typical products processed with sectional coolers include calcined petroleum coke, zinc calcine, soda ash and pigments. The entry temperature of the products can reach up to 1400 °C.

Clutch Mechanical device

A clutch is a mechanical device that engages and disengages power transmission, especially from a drive shaft to a driven shaft. The clutch acts as a mechanical linkage between the engine and transmission; and briefly disconnects, or separates the engine from the drivetrain, and therefore the drive wheels, whenever the pedal is depressed, allowing the driver to smoothly change gears.

Lime kiln

A lime kiln is a kiln used for the calcination of limestone (calcium carbonate) to produce the form of lime called quicklime (calcium oxide). The chemical equation for this reaction is

Rotary valve

A rotary valve is a type of valve in which the rotation of a passage or passages in a transverse plug regulates the flow of liquid or gas through the attached pipes. The common stopcock is the simplest form of rotary valve. Rotary valves have been applied in numerous applications, including:

Calcination refers to heating a solid to high temperatures in absence of air or oxygen, generally for the purpose of removing impurities or volatile substances. However, calcination is also used to mean a thermal treatment process in the absence or limited supply of air or oxygen applied to ores and other solid materials to bring about a thermal decomposition. The root of the word calcination refers to its most prominent use, which is to remove carbon from limestone through combustion to yield calcium oxide (quicklime). This calcination reaction is CaCO3(s) → CaO(s) + CO2(g). Calcium oxide is a crucial ingredient in modern cement, and is also used as a chemical flux in smelting. Industrial calcination generally emits carbon dioxide (CO
2
), making it a major contributor to climate change.

Continuous production is a flow production method used to manufacture, produce, or process materials without interruption. Continuous production is called a continuous process or a continuous flow process because the materials, either dry bulk or fluids that are being processed are continuously in motion, undergoing chemical reactions or subject to mechanical or heat treatment. Continuous processing is contrasted with batch production.

Pyrometallurgy is a branch of extractive metallurgy. It consists of the thermal treatment of minerals and metallurgical ores and concentrates to bring about physical and chemical transformations in the materials to enable recovery of valuable metals. Pyrometallurgical treatment may produce products able to be sold such as pure metals, or intermediate compounds or alloys, suitable as feed for further processing. Examples of elements extracted by pyrometallurgical processes include the oxides of less reactive elements like iron, copper, zinc, chromium, tin, and manganese.

Rotary dryer

The rotary dryer is a type of industrial dryer used to reduce or minimize the moisture content of the material it is handling by bringing it into contact with a heated gas. The dryer is made up of a rotating cylinder, a drive mechanism, and a support structure. The cylinder is inclined slightly with the discharge end is lower than the material feed end so that material moves through the dryer under the influence of gravity. Material to be dried enters the dryer, and as the dryer rotates, the material is lifted up by a series of fins lining the inner wall of the dryer. When the material gets high enough, it falls back down to the bottom of the dryer, passing through the hot gas stream as it falls.

Rotary kiln

A rotary kiln is a pyroprocessing device used to raise materials to a high temperature (calcination) in a continuous process. Materials produced using rotary kilns include:

Cement kiln

Cement kilns are used for the pyroprocessing stage of manufacture of Portland and other types of hydraulic cement, in which calcium carbonate reacts with silica-bearing minerals to form a mixture of calcium silicates. Over a billion tonnes of cement are made per year, and cement kilns are the heart of this production process: their capacity usually defines the capacity of the cement plant. As the main energy-consuming and greenhouse-gas–emitting stage of cement manufacture, improvement of kiln efficiency has been the central concern of cement manufacturing technology.

Skiving or scarfing is the process of cutting material off in slices, usually metal, but also leather or laminates. Skiving is used instead of rolling the material to shape when the material must not be work hardened, or must not shed minute slivers of metal later which is common in cold rolling processes.

Turbine blade Individual component makes up the turbine section of a gas turbine or steam turbine.

A turbine blade is the individual component which makes up the turbine section of a gas turbine or steam turbine. The blades are responsible for extracting energy from the high temperature, high pressure gas produced by the combustor. The turbine blades are often the limiting component of gas turbines. To survive in this difficult environment, turbine blades often use exotic materials like superalloys and many different methods of cooling that can be categorized as internal and external cooling, and thermal barrier coatings. Blade fatigue is a major source of failure in steam turbines and gas turbines. Fatigue is caused by the stress induced by vibration and resonance within the operating range of machinery. To protect blades from these high dynamic stresses, friction dampers are used.

Rotary union

A rotary union is a union that allows for rotation of the united parts. It is thus a device that provides a seal between a stationary supply passage and a rotating part to permit the flow of a fluid into and/or out of the rotating part. Fluids typically used with rotary joints and rotating unions include various heat transfer media and fluid power media such as steam, water, thermal oil, hydraulic fluid, and coolants. A rotary union is sometimes referred to as a rotating union, rotary valve, swivel union, rotorseal, rotary couplings, rotary joint, rotating joints, hydraulic coupling, pneumatic rotary union, through bore rotary union, air rotary union, electrical rotary union, or vacuum rotary union

Flights (rotary dryer)

Flights, also commonly referred to as "material lifters" or "shovelling plates" are used in rotary dryers and rotary coolers to shower material through the process gas stream. Fixed to the interior of the rotary drum, these fin-like structures scoop material up from the material bed at the bottom of the drum and shower it through the gas stream as the drum rotates. This showering creates a curtain of material spanning the width of the drum, helping to maximize the efficiency of heat transfer.

Grenzebach BSH

Grenzebach BSH (GmbH) was established following the take-over of Babcock-BSH GmbH by Grenzebach Maschinenbau GmbH. Grenzebach BSH GmbH has its registered office in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, and has been a member of the Grenzebach group since October 2002. The company employs some 350 people and at the Bad Hersfeld location continues its predecessor's activities as a supplier of equipment and services for the wood processing and building materials industries as well as the process technology sector. Its offices and workshops were first located in buildings that in part dated back to the old Schilde AG. Beginning in the summer of 2007, engineering and administration were the first departments to move into a new office building located at Gewerbepark Hohe Luft, a business park at the periphery of Bad Hersfeld. Construction of a new factory building right next to the offices began in 2008 and was completed in 2009. Manufacturing and the remaining departments such as R&D and logistics then also moved in from mid-2009. By the end of 2009 all buildings on the former Schilde premises in the town centre were vacated and handed back their owner, the town of Bad Hersfeld.
