Seija-Riitta Laakso is a Finnish writer and philatelist, as well as editor of international philatelic journals and yearbooks. In 2021, she was invited to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists.

Education

Seija-Riitta Laakso is a journalist from the Sanoma School of Journalism who also has an eMBA from the Helsinki School of Economics (Helsingin Kauppakorkeakoulu) and a PhD from the University of Helsinki (2006). Her doctoral thesis Across the Oceans. Development of Overseas Business Information Transmission, 1815-1875 [1] was published by the Finnish Literature Society (SKS) in 2007, and as a Japanese edition in 2014. The book combines maritime history and postal history by studying the routes and speed at which information was transmitted in the nineteenth century, using as examples business correspondence which travelled internationally by sea. [2]

Career

Laakso, originally a historian, worked as a journalist in Finnish daily newspapers Helsingin Sanomat, Uusi Suomi and Kauppalehti. She was director in the Centre for Finnish Business and Policy Studies (Elinkeinoelämän Valtuuskunta, EVA) and Senior Vice President / Vice President, Corporate Communications at Valmet Oyj, Silja Line Oyj and Ahlstrom Oyj, from 1991 to 2002. In 2003-2004 she lived in Liverpool, UK, for her doctoral studies. She has written and published several books.

Philately

Laakso was the Secretary General of the Philatelic Federation of Finland from 2005 to 2013. She is currently the Editor of The Posthorn, the journal of the Scandinavian Collectors Club (US); The Congress Book, the yearbook of the American Philatelic Congress (US); and Postryttaren, the yearbook of the Friends of the Swedish Post Museum, Svenska Postmusei Vänner. From July 2017 to December 2019, she was also the Editor of The London Philatelist, the journal of The Royal Philatelic Society London. [3] As an exhibitor, she has received 36 gold or large gold medals in philatelic exhibitions by the end of 2020.

In 2021, she was invited to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists. [4]

Finno-Ugric languages Disputed grouping of Uralic languages

Finno-Ugric or Finno-Ugrian (Fenno-Ugrian), is a traditional grouping of all languages in the Uralic language family except the Samoyedic languages. Fazer is one of the largest corporations in the Finnish food industry. The company was founded by Karl Fazer in 1891, as a "French-Russian confectionery" in central Helsinki. Postal Union Congress

The Postal Union Congress is the main international meeting of the Universal Postal Union, used to discuss various issues affecting international postal services, such as legislation, the political climate, and other strategic issues. Packet boats were medium-sized boats designed for domestic mail, passenger, and freight transportation in European countries and in North American rivers and canals, some of them steam driven. They were used extensively during the 18th and 19th centuries and featured regularly scheduled service.

The West Point was a full rigged vessel built in the 1840s and used for the transportation of goods, passengers and mail to and from Liverpool and New York. It was one of a few ocean-going packet-ships operated by the Robert Kermit Red Star Line company, not to be confused with the Belgian/US-American shipping company Red Star Line, whose main ports of call were New York City and Philadelphia in the United States and Antwerp in Belgium.

Robert Kermit Red Star Line

In 1818 the Red Star Line was founded by Byrnes, Trimble & Co. from New York.. On September 11, 1835 the line was bought by Robert Kermit from New York, a ship-owner and agent for packet ships, and was renamed Robert Kermits Red Star Line. In 1851 Robert Kermit took his brother-in-law Charles Carow into partnership as Kermit & Carow to carry on the business of general ship owning, commission and commercial trading. Robert Kermit died in 1855 and Carow assumed the business. In 1867 the Red Star Line went down.

Roll of Distinguished Philatelists Philatelic award

The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921. The Roll consists of five pieces of parchment to which the signatories add their names.

Peter P. McCann, of University Park, Florida, is a philatelist who has supported the hobby of philately on a national scale. For his varied services to the American Philatelic Society (APS) over several decades, he was awarded in 2008 the Luff Award for outstanding service to the society.

W. A. S. Westoby

William Amos Scarborough Westoby M.A. (1815–1899) was an English philatelist who was one of the "Fathers of Philately" entered on the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1921. His obituary in The London Philatelist stated that he had "...fairly earned the title of the Grand Seigneur of Philately." By profession, Westoby was a barrister of Lincoln's Inn.

Kerttu Maarit Kirsti Vuolab is a Finnish Sámi author, illustrator, translator and songwriter, who has made it her life mission to ensure that the Sámi oral tradition, language and culture are passed on to future generations of Sámi through multiple media types. Her works have been translated into other Sámi languages such as Inari and Skolt Sámi as well as non-Sámi languages such as Swedish, Finnish, and English.

Lieutenant-Colonel William Byam was a British Harley Street physician whose home in Guernsey was occupied by the Germans during the Second World War. In his spare time, Byam was a noted philatelist who was added to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1949.

L. Onerva

L. Onerva was a Finnish poet. Onerva also wrote short stories and novels and worked as a translator and critic. In her works, she often dealt with tension in women's lives concerning freedom and commitment. She is also remembered for her complicated relationship with Eino Leino, as well as her marriage to the composer Leevi Madetoja.
