Seitu Jones (born 1951, Minneapolis, Minnesota) is a multi-disciplinary artist and community organizer known for his large-scale public artworks and environmental design. Working both independently and in collaboration with other artists, Jones has created over forty large-scale public art works. [2] [3]
Jones is retired from the faculty of the Interdisciplinary Arts MFA program at Goddard College, Port Townsend, Washington and lives and works in St. Paul, Minnesota. [4]
Born in north Minneapolis in 1951, Jones attended Field Elementary School in Minneapolis where he realized then he did not want to be anything other than an artist. [3]
Before graduating from high school his grandfather took him to see the Wall of Respect in Chicago, Illinois which was considered the first collective street mural. For Jones, "just seeing these black figures done large-scale – that blew my mind. From then on, I saw the power of the museum of the streets. That was my turning point to want to create large-scale work." [5]
Seitu Jones finds inspiration in his great-grandfather who born in slavery. After gaining his freedom, he later came and settled in Minnesota in 1877 first working at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing, Minnesota, as a porter. After earning enough money he started a farm in Rochester, Minnesota where Seitu Jones' grandmother was born. [5]
Jones describes growing up in a family that was very creative. In addition to having aunts and uncles that were painters, Jones' father was an artist and a painter. And considers himself fortunate to have their work around as inspiration. According to Jones due to discrimination and widespread racism, his father gave up on art as a career instead of running a print shop from his home. His father was also a sign painter, painting signs for black businesses on Minneapolis' south side. [6]
Much of Jones' art centers around placemaking creating and manipulating space while working with the surrounding community to change and temporarily transforming a space to create a sense of place. Jones was also influenced by the Black Arts Movement and its central belief that artists have an obligation to leave their communities “more beautiful than they found it.” [5]
Jones' art has been exhibited at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the American Craft Museum in New York, and the Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC. [7]
He has created sets for multiple Twin Cities' theaters including Penumbra Theatre Company, SteppingStone Theatre, Macalester College, Pangea World Theater, Minneapolis Children's Theatre Company, Illusion Theater, and Guthrie Theater, as well as First Stage Children's Theater, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Chernin Center for the Arts in Chicago, Illinois, and PS 122 in New York City, New York. In 2013 Jones received a Joyce Award from Chicago's Joyce Foundation which allowed him to develop "CREATE: The Community Meal", a dinner for 2,000 people at a table a half a mile long. The project focused on access to healthy food. [4]
Jones also designed "Turnip Greens" in 2019. Suspended in the center of the Nashville Farmers' Market atrium, the large scale public art piece depicts a massive basket of spilled greens. The piece honors a staple of local food culture and the people who grow it while shining a light on food injustice. “There’s no way we can meet all the farmers who produce our food for us but this is a small way that we can stretch out our hands to embrace those folks”. Jones has collaborated in a number of projects with Ta-coumba T. Aiken, including a project entitled "Shadows of Spirit" (1992), a series of sculptures in the form of human silhouettes cast in bronze and embedded in the Nicollet Mall wide sidewalks with poetry by Rosemary Soyini Vinelle Guyton is inscribed on each shadow. Commissioned by the City of Minneapolis, it honors significant figures from the region's cultural history. [9]
In another collaboration, Jones and Aiken developed seven sculptures at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden entitled "Shadows at the Crossroads" (2019) meant to be an extension of the Nicollet Mall project, again honoring and celebrating a group of individuals in their public artwork. [2]
The Walker Art Center is a multidisciplinary contemporary art center in the Lowry Hill neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. The Walker is one of the most-visited modern and contemporary art museums in the U.S.: together with the adjacent Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and Cowles Conservatory, it has an annual attendance of around 700,000 visitors. The museum's permanent collection includes over 13,000 modern and contemporary art pieces, including books, costumes, drawings, media works, paintings, photography, prints, and sculpture.
Nicollet Mall is a twelve-block portion of Nicollet Avenue running through Downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. It is a shopping and dining district of the city, and also a pedestrian mall and transit mall. Along with Hennepin Avenue to the west, Nicollet Mall forms the cultural and commercial center of Minneapolis.
John Thomas Biggers was an African-American muralist who came to prominence after the Harlem Renaissance and toward the end of World War II. Biggers created works critical of racial and economic injustice. He also served as the founding chairman of the art department at Houston's Texas State University for Negroes, a historically black college.
The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is an 11-acre (4.5 ha) park in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the United States. It is located near the Walker Art Center, which operates it in coordination with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. It reopened June 10, 2017, after a reconstruction that resulted with the Walker and Sculpture Garden being unified as one 19-acre campus. It is one of the largest urban sculpture gardens in the country, with 40 permanent art installations and several other temporary pieces that are moved in and out periodically.

Nora Naranjo Morse is a Native American artist and poet. She currently resides in Española, New Mexico just north of Santa Fe and is a member of the Santa Clara Pueblo, part of the Tewa people. Her work can be found in several museum collections including the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, the Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minnesota, and the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC, where her hand-built sculpture piece, Always Becoming, was selected from more than 55 entries submitted by Native artists as the winner of an outdoor sculpture competition held in 2005. In 2014, she was honored with a NACF Artist Fellowship for Visual Arts and was selected to prepare temporal public art for the 5x5 Project by curator Lance Fung.
Jakob Henrik Gerhard Fjelde was a Norwegian-born American sculptor. He is remembered as both a prolific portraitist and the creator of public monuments. One of his better known works is the one dedicated to the 1st Minnesota Infantry (1897) located at Gettysburg Battlefield where its 262 members suffered 215 casualties.
Kinji Akagawa is an American sculptor, printmaker, and arts educator best known for sculptural constructions that also serve a practical function. A pioneer in the public art movement, Akagawa has throughout his career examined the relationship between art and community, most notably the concept of art as a process of inquiry. His sculpture and public artworks are noted for their refined elegance and use of natural materials, such as granite, basalt, field stone, cedar, and ipe wood.

Gwendolyn "Gwen" Gillen was an American sculptor and artist. Her best known works include a bronze sculpture of actress Mary Tyler Moore tossing her Tam o' shanter hat into the air as a homage to the final scene of opening credits of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Gillen's life-size sculpture of Moore, dedicated in 2002 on the Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis, is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and a "symbol of Minneapolis". Her other well known pieces include a 4-foot bronze sculpture of Gertie the Duck, which was installed on the Wisconsin Avenue bridge in Milwaukee in 1997.
Amy Toscani is a Minnesota-based sculptor whose large scale works are informed by an arts and crafts aesthetic evocative of childhood. Amy Toscani was born in 1963 in Dayton, Ohio. She received both her Bachelor of Fine Arts and her Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University.
Nyeema Morgan is an American interdisciplinary and conceptual artist. Working in drawing, sculpture and print media, her works focus on how meaning is constructed and communicated given complex socio-political systems. Born in Philadelphia, she earned her BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art and her MFA from the California College of the Arts. She has held artist residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and Smack Mellon. Morgan's works are in the permanent collections of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art and the Menil Collection.
Shadows at the Crossroads is a collection of seven sculptures created by Twin-Cities based artists, Ta-Coumba T.Aiken, and Seitu Jones, as commissioned for the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. On display since 2019, the works depict historically prominent and influential Minnesotan figures. The collection is a revival and continuation of a previous collaboration by the respective artists, titled "Shadows of Spirit," which was commissioned for the Nicollet Mall situated in downtown Minneapolis in 1992. It was funded by the T.B. Walker Fund, 2019. Thomas Barlow Walker founded the Walker Arts Center in 1927, which, in partnership with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, manages the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden where the collection is housed.
Caroline Kent is an American visual artist based in Chicago, best known for her large scale abstract painting works that explore the interplay between language and translation. Ta-coumba T. Aiken is a painter and public artist who identifies his work as superlative realism. He has created over 600 murals and public art works. A mural Aiken designed in 2013 using over 596,000 Lite Brite pegs holds the Guinness World Record for the largest picture made of Lite Brite. He has also taught and curated. He is sometimes referred to as the "mayor of Lowertown" for his neighborhood presence at his longtime studio in the Lowertown Lofts Artists Cooperative in the Lowertown neighborhood in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota.
