Seja Vogel (pronounced say-ah; born 21 May 1981) is a German-Australian musician who was a member of Brisbane bands Sekiden and Regurgitator. [1]
Vogel was born on 21 May 1981 in Kassel, West Germany. She grew up in Stuttgart before moving to Australia with her family when she was seven years old. She attended a Steiner School and often credits her creativity to her early Steiner Education. Vogel learnt violin and piano at an early age, and became interested in synthesizers after hearing bands like The Cars, Devo and Kraftwerk in high school.
Formed in 1998, Sekiden released two albums and two EPs. The band was known for high-energy live performances and they toured extensively throughout Australia, Canada, Japan and the USA, touring with bands such as the Zoobombs. Sekiden released music through Modular Records, Australian independent labels Redline Records and Valve, [2] Japanese label Bad News, [3] and the American Boompa! label. [4]
Vogel joined iconic genre-mashers Regurgitator in 2007 as a touring member and also contributed to their studio album Love and Paranoia that was recorded in Brazil. Vogel also played in the backing bands of Spod, Heinz Reigler, Ben Salter and David McCormack. [5]
Vogel later recorded and performed under her own name for the album We Have Secrets But Nobody Cares , released through Sydney record label Rice Is Nice on 27 March 2010. [1] [5] Vogel toured widely following the release of the album and supported acts such as Sarah Blasko, Goldfrapp and Warpaint.
In between touring and recording, Vogel started a textile label named 'Pul(sew)idth' that produces miniature felt replicas of instruments made by Vogel herself. [6]
Seja’s much anticipated third album Here Is One I Know You Know is both a leap in production and again an ode to analogue. Self-produced and recorded in her home studio in Brisbane, it is a dense collection of squelchy synths, drum machines and computer bongos with an undercurrent of sweet melodies sung about self critical and often tongue in cheek self deprecation. The album welcomes a few close friends playing real acoustic instruments, including Jen Boyce (Ball Park Music) on bass, Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint (band)) on percussion, Fred Armisen (SNL, Portlandia) on octobans, Georgia Mooney (All Our Exes Live in Texas) on backing vocals, George Browning (Velociraptor) on drums and percussion, Nicole Perry on congas, Chris Farrer (the Quickening) on guitar solos, Conrad Greenleaf (Richard in Your Mind) on bass and Danny Widdicombe (the Wilson Pickers) on pedal steel.
At the end of 2016, Seja started her podcast HearSej where she talks to musicians and other creatives about their careers in a casual and intimate conversation. At the end of each episode, Seja asks her guest about the strangest experience they have had, as a result of their chosen line of work. Some guests include Kevin Mitchell of Jebediah, Sarah Blasko, Megan Washington, Benjamin Law, Fred Armisen and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco).

The Black Crowes are an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1984. Their discography includes nine studio albums, four live albums and several charting singles. The band was signed to Def American Recordings in 1989 by producer George Drakoulias and released their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, the following year. Their follow-up, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, reached the top of the Billboard 200 in 1992. The albums Amorica (1994), Three Snakes and One Charm (1996), By Your Side (1999), and Lions (2001) followed, with each showing moderate popularity but failing to capture the chart successes of the band's first two albums. Regurgitator are an Australian alternative rock band from Brisbane, Queensland, formed in late 1993 by Quan Yeomans on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards; Ben Ely on bass guitar, keyboards and vocals; and Martin Lee on drums. Their debut studio album, Tu-Plang was released in May 1996; it was followed by Unit in November 1997 which was certified triple platinum. Unit won five categories at the ARIA Music Awards of 1998: Album of the Year, Best Alternative Album, Producer of the Year, Engineer of the Year (Magoo) and Best Cover Art. Their third album, ...Art was released in August 1999.
Keane are an English alternative rock band from Battle, East Sussex, formed in 1995. The band comprises Tom Chaplin, Tim Rice-Oxley, Richard Hughes and Jesse Quin. Their original line-up included founder and guitarist Dominic Scott, who left in 2001.
Unit is the second studio album by Australian rock band Regurgitator, released in November 1997. Its style is a mixture of 1980s style synthesised pop music and alternative rock, with some hip hop influences. The album debuted and peaked at number 4 on the ARIA Charts. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1998, the album won five ARIA Music Awards; including Album of the Year.
Front End Loader are an Australian rock band which formed in December 1991 with founding mainstays, Bowden Campbell on guitar and vocals; Davis Claymore on lead vocals and guitar; Richard Corey on bass guitar; and Peter Kostic on drums. Front End Loader have issued six studio albums, Front End Loader, Let's Ride!, Last of the V8 Interceptors, How Can We Fail When We're So Sincere?, Ritardando and Neutral Evil (2018). At the ARIA Music Awards of 2011 Front End Loader won an award for Ritardando as Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album. Valve Records is an Australian record label that releases music from both local and international alternative music artists. The label was founded by Paul Curtis in 1994 to support the local bands he was managing. One of the bands he manages, Regurgitator, did not release music on Valve Records until 2003–2004, following a split with Warner EastWest and the completion of the first Band in a Bubble project in Melbourne's Federation Square.
Spod are an Australian indie, electro band, often styled as SPOD, which formed in 1995. It is also the pseudonym of the band's mainstay member, Brent Griffin, whether he is performing solo or with other members. They have released two albums, Taste the Radness (2003) and Superfrenz.
Love and Paranoia is the sixth studio album by Australian rock band Regurgitator. It was released in Australia on 15 September 2007 and was inspired by 1980s rock. The first single was Blood & Spunk which received high rotation on Triple J. The animated video for this track was produced by Quan Yeomans in Hong Kong. As the album's title track suggests, several songs are unguardedly romantic, while others touch on the paranoia, fear and resulting insularity in these politically conservative days. The majority of the album was recorded mid-2007 in Brazil. The album is also the first to feature new member Seja Vogel who provides keyboards and vocals. The band toured the album extensively throughout Australia and it was also featured on the 2008 Big Day Out tour. In October 2008, the band headed to the UK, where it had not played for five years, in support of the release before heading to Asia, including their first tour of China, to finish the Love and Paranoia tour.

Sekiden were an Australian three-piece pop band formed in Brisbane, Queensland in 1998 by Simon Graydon on lead guitar and vocals, Mirko Vogel on drums and his sister Seja on keyboards and lead vocals. They released two studio albums, Junior Fiction (2003) and Sound Instincts (2006), before disbanding in the following year. Seja Vogel was a touring member of Regurgitator from 2007 to 2009 and then worked as a solo artist to issue two albums, We Have Secrets But Nobody Cares (2010) and All Our Wires (2013).

Rice Is Nice is an independent record label based in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia that takes its name from Welsh post-hardcore band Mclusky's 2000 single "Rice Is Nice". The label aims to promote artists that are unique and whose music will have longevity, rather than being based on popularity. Rice Is Nice is run by Julia Wilson and Lulu Rae.

Stella Mozgawa is an Australian drummer and record producer, best known as a member of the indie rock band Warpaint, with whom she has recorded four studio albums. Alongside her work with Warpaint, Mozgawa is one half of the electronica duo Belief, and is a former member the hard rock collective Desert Sessions.
