Selfie (stylized as #selfie) is a 2014 Romanian teen comedy film directed by Cristina Jacob and produced by Zazu Film. [1] The plot revolves around three 18-year-old girls (played by Crina Semciuc, Flavia Hojda and Olimpia Melinte) who decide to spend their last days before the final exam on a trip to the beach, rather than keep studying. The film is catching attention upon the selfie phenomenon, famous among the young generation in 2014. The action of the movie is immortalising the protagonists using their mobile phones and posting selfie photos and videos on social media. [2]

Yasmine, Roxi and Ana are willing to have fun and forget about the stress of the last 2 days before the Baccalaureate exam. For them, having fun means a final big adventure, breaking the rules and never thinking about any possible consequences. In their seek for freedom, love and adrenaline they meet three young men they hang out with at sea. [3]

Production

#Selfie (2014) marks Cristina Jacob’s directorial debut. [5] The cast is a mix of young actors and well-known Romanian actors. #Selfie’s script writing involved another two screenwriters in addition to Cristina Jacob: Maria Spirache and Alexandru Molico. [6] [7] #Selfie is a MediaPro Pictures and Zazu Film production.

Filming

#Selfie production was a process of 27 days, in 12 different locations and 68 professionals involved. 10 cameras were used to create an impressive stunt and nine stuntmen performed the scenes in which a car plunged into the waters of the Black Sea. The whole scene was filmed "from a single double". [8]

Music

The soundtrack of the film is signed by Hahaha Production. One of the composers is Smiley - on his real name Andrei Maria Tiberiu. Smiley can also be seen in the film, performing the role of a watermelon seller from Vama Veche, together with Alex Velea. [9]

Reception

With over $355.000 and 86.000 admissions in Box Office, 1.100.000 views on Tv, 12 Film festival selections and 7 awards,Selfie was the highest-grossing Romanian film of 2014 in its country. [10] For this reason it won the Public Prize at the 2015 Gopo Awards, being also nominated for other four categories. [11] A sequel titled Selfie 69 , also directed by Jacob, was released in 2016. "Vanilla Chocolat" is a song recorded by Romanian singer Alexandra Stan for her second studio album, Unlocked (2014). It features guest vocals provided by Romanian rapper Connect-R. The track was made available for digital download on 24 December 2014 as the album's fifth single. "Vanilla Chocolat" was written by Stan, Connect-R, Sava Constantin, Alexandru Cotoi and Mika Moupondo, while production was handled by Cotoi. A selfie music video for the song was directed by Stan and The Architect, and debuted on Stan's YouTube channel on 18 December 2014. After its release, music critics praised "Vanilla Chocolat" for Connect-R's "catchy rap" and French bits, while others pointed out the "easy-to-sing", but at the same time "nonsense" lyrics of the track. The song was performed during Stan's "Unlocked Tour" (2014), and together with "Cherry Pop" on Romanian show Vocea României.

Sunt o babă comunistă is a 2013 Romanian drama film directed by Stere Gulea. It stars Luminița Gheorghiu, Marian Râlea, and Ana Ularu. Set in 2010 post-communist Romania, the title character and her husband are visited by their daughter who has been living in the United States for the last 10 years. The film was released in Romania on 14 February 2019 by Jacob Bros and on Netflix on 1 June 2019. Oh, Ramona! is the first Romanian film distributed worldwide on Netflix in 190 territories, dubbed in 27 languages and translated in 33 languages. During the 8 weeks of theatrical distribution, Oh, Ramona! recorded a total of 256.115 admissions, with 30,243 tickets sold on the first day and reached about 111.881 admissions after the first weekend of release.."Oh, Ramona! is a film about the new generation of teenagers… mentalities, behaviours and all the change in the context of globalisation.
