Septemvri Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Sofia, Bulgaria. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium will hold 4,500.

Multi-purpose stadiums are a type of stadium designed to be easily used by multiple types of events. While any stadium could potentially host more than one type of sport or event, this concept usually refers to a specific design philosophy that stresses multifunctionality over specificity. It is used most commonly in Canada and the United States, where the two most popular outdoor team sports – football and baseball – require radically different facilities. Football uses a rectangular field, while baseball is played on a diamond and large outfield. This requires a particular design to accommodate both, usually an oval. While building stadiums in this way means that sports teams and governments can share costs, it also imposes some challenges.

Old Septemvri Stadium

Septemvri Stadium was opened on 18 March 1958 with a friendly match against PFC Septemvri Sofia and PFC Levski Sofia. The stadium had 25,000 seats.

PFC Septemvri Sofia

Septemvri is a Bulgarian professional association football club based in Sofia, who compete in the First League, the top division of Bulgarian football. Its home ground is the Septemvri Stadium, but due to its poor condition the team plays its home matches at the Bistritsa Stadium and 57th Public School's FIFA-certified football field.

New Septemvri Stadium

In 2011 Hristo Stoichkov announced that a new Septemvri Stadium would be built with 15,000 seats and would have the name The Crown of Septemvri. [1] [2] But the project was cancelled in 2013.

Hristo Stoichkov Bulgarian footballer

Hristo Stoichkov is a Bulgarian former footballer who is currently a football commentator for Univision Deportes. A prolific forward, he is regarded as one of the best players of his generation and is widely considered the greatest Bulgarian footballer of all time. He was runner-up for the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 1992 and 1994, and received the Ballon d'Or in 1994. In 2004, Stoichkov was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players.

After the takeover of Septemvri by DIT Group in 2015, the new owners would fund a new stadium. In the beginning of 2017 it was announced that the new Septemvri Stadium building would start in summer 2017, if the team get the promotion for the Bulgarian First League. [3] In 2018 the project with 4,500 seats was run, expecting to be approved before the end of 2018. [4]
