Sergio Stivaletti (born 15 March 1957) is an Italian special effects artist, make-up artist, director and screenwriter.

Life and career

Born in Rome, while being a student of medicine at the Sapienza University Stivaletti entered the film industry as an uncredited builder of small props in some Pupi Avati films. [1] [2] [3] He got his first credit as special effects artist in Riccardo Freda's Murder Obsession . [4] In 1985, he began a long professional association with Dario Argento, handling special effects and make-up in Phenomena . [2] [5] He is also a frequent collaborator of Michele Soavi and Lamberto Bava both in their film and television projects, and also worked in films by Matteo Garrone, Gabriele Salvatores, Sergio Castellitto and Julie Taymor. [3]

In 1997, Stivaletti debuted as director with Wax Mask , replacing original director Lucio Fulci who had died during the pre-production phase. [2] [4] [6]

The film is about a series of murders on young women who are found with their blood drained. The newspapers report on a killer known as the Vampire, which prompts young journalist Pierre Lantin to research the crimes. From a screenplay written by Argento with Franco Ferrini and Carlo Lucarelli, Dark Glasses stars Ilenia Pastorelli as an Italian escort who is attacked and blinded by a serial killer in an attempted murder. While escaping the attack by car, she meets a young Chinese boy who assists her in her lack of sight. Argento's daughter, Asia Argento, appears in the film, and also serves as the film's associate producer.
