The Czerwinski (1927) glider was a simple, open frame, monoplane glider built in Poland to spread enthusiasm for aviation.
Sergiuz Czerwiński, no relation of the better known glider designer Wacław Czerwiński, had designed, built and flown his first glider, a biplane, in 1917. In 1927 he, like several other Polish aircraft enthusiasts, saw that gliding offered a cheap route to flying for the young and produced a suitable aircraft, developed in an aeromodelling group he formed at the Słowacki school in Kowel. The 1927 Czerwiński monoplane glider had a rectangular plan, two part wing, built around a single spar and fabric covered. Instead of conventional ailerons and elevators, the pilot was able to alter the angle of incidence of each half-wing separately. This control system, used by several Polish gliders between about 1924 and 1927, was underpinned by the idea that gliders could obtain lift by capturing the energy of gusts, the pilot increasing the angle of incidence of the whole wing as soon as the upward motion of the glider indicated a horizontal gust. Differential incidence movement controlled roll, like ailerons, and collective operation controlled pitch, removing the need for an elevator. [1] [2]
The Czerwińsk had an open frame fuselage, a flat truss built from ash with I-form chords and cross-members. The pilot sat on the lower chord behind the first cross-member. At the rear the empennage was fabric covered, with a tailplane without elevators and a conventional fin and rudder. [1] [2]
Czerwiński made some dozen successful flights in the Kowel area but felt limited by the generally flat terrain there and presented his glider to ZASPL, the aviation students association of Lviv Polytechnic, who seem to have made no use of it. [1] [2]

The Czerwiński Sparrow, sometimes known as the de Havilland Canada glider, was a single seat glider, designed and built by a group of de Haviiland engineers in Canada in 1942. It was intended to popularise gliding and be suitable for both basic training and thermal soaring.
The Manuel Hawk was a homebuilt single-seat glider designed and constructed in the UK around 1970. Only one example was flown.
The Akaflieg Darmstadt D-9 Konsul, often shortened to Darmstadt D-9 Konsul, was a high performance, single seat, cantilever monoplane sailplane, designed and built by a German University student group in 1923 for hill soaring.
The Caproni Sauro-1, or Caproni Tricap, was a light, single-engine cantilever monoplane, seating two in tandem, built in Italy in the early 1930s for touring. Despite good performance and favourable test reports, only one was built.
The UTG-1 Loudon was an intermediate glider designed and built at the University of Toronto in Canada during the late 1940s.
The Bonomi BS.9 Bertina II was a single seat glider with a layout somewhere between that of a flying wing and the conventional, tail stabilized arrangement. A single example was designed and built in Italy in the 1930s.
The Piana Canova PC.100 was a primary glider designed and built in Italy in the 1930s. It had many of the characteristics of these simple aircraft but differed greatly in using a wing of rhomboidal plan. Only one was built.
The Piana Canova PC.500 single-seat glider was a development of the earlier PC.100 primary glider, more robust and capable of aerobatics. Both were designed and built in Italy in the mid-1930s and they shared an unusual thick profile wing of rhomboidal plan. Only one PC.500 was built.
The Bazzocchi EB.2 was a one off, Italian single seat glider designed and built by a university student in 1936, his second design of the year.
The F.V.D. Doris or Dresden Doris, later known as the Akaflieg Dresden D-B2 Doris, was a monoplane glider built in Germany in 1922. It was unusual in having wings which could independently adjust their angles of attack, a feature intended to increase the energy acquired from gusts of wind.
The Sb.1 Münchener Eindecker, Loessl Sb.1 Münchener Eindecker,, was a high-wing single-seat glider with an unusual method of pitch and roll control. It won prizes at the second Rhön competition held on the Wasserkuppe in 1921.
The Tułacz M.1 was a Polish glider which competed in the First Polish Glider Contest in 1923. It had some advanced features but its unconventional control system may have caused the landing accident at the end of its first and only flight.
The Jach Żabuś {Jach Froggy) was a Polish glider designed to compete in the 1923 First Polish Glider Contest. It lacked vertical flying surfaces, had an unusual control system and made only one short flight. Rebuilt with conventional tail and controls, it won the distance flown prize at the second contest, held in 1925.
The Elżanowski ZE-1 Cytrynka (Lemon) was a basic training glider built in Poland in 1930 by an amateur group.
The Czerwiński CW I,, was a Polish glider designed and built by a students' group. Its career was brief but it made the first generally recognized soaring flight in Poland, a strong refutation of the current idea that Polish topography was not suited to the sport.
The Czerwiński CW II,, was a Polish open frame glider. In 1929 it set a new national duration record and flew successfully until the end of 1931, when several major structural and aerodynamic modifications improved its performance. A simpler, lighter version, the CW III,, was designed and built in parallel with it and became Poland's first production glider.
The one-off, experimental Czerwiński CW IV was a Polish high performance glider and the nation's first two-seater. It set several national records and influenced later Polish designs.
The Czerwiński CW 8 was a mid-1930s Polish open-frame basic training glider. Its design was advanced and its price low, but its stalling characteristics were too dangerous for beginners, so the thirty-plus examples completed were rapidly withdrawn from use. Two were subsequently modified, one with greater span and the other with a small engine.
The Warsztaty Szybowcowe Wrona, or Kocjan Wrona after its designer, was the most numerous and widely used Polish pre-war primary trainer glider.
The Oškinis BRO-16, sometimes known as the Oškinis BRO-16 Pempė, was a seaplane, biplane training glider, flown and produced in the USSR in the 1970s.
