Serhiy Salov [a] (born 30 May 1979) is a Canadian pianist of Ukrainian origin. [1] Born in Donetsk, Ukraine, Salov won First Prize in the piano category of the 2004 Montreal International Musical Competition [2] and Second Prize in the 2010 Gina Bachauer International Artists Competition, [3] in Salt Lake City, Utah. In May 2014 he returned to the Montreal International Musical Competition to win the first Richard Lupien Improvisation Prize. [4]
Salov performs the solo piano music in the 2019 feature film Coda (directed by Claude Lalonde ). [5] The film stars Patrick Stewart as a famous concert pianist struggling with anxiety attacks. In addition to using Salov’s recordings of more than 25 classical works that appear to be performed by Stewart’s character Henry Cole, the film features Salov on camera in a brief cameo as a minor character, appearing in the credits as “Ukrainian Pianist.” [6]
Gina Bachauer was a Greek classical pianist who toured extensively in the United States and Europe. Interested in piano at a young age, Bachauer graduated from the Athens Conservatory and studied under Alfred Cortot and Sergei Rachmaninoff. She is best known for playing Romantic piano concertos. She played hundreds of concerts for the Allied troops in the Middle East during World War II while she lived in Egypt. She spent a lot of time touring the United States and Europe, giving over 100 concerts each year. Bachauer also recorded extensively, both as a soloist and with orchestras. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Utah. During her career she was called the "queen of pianists". The Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation was named in honor of her contributions to the musical world. In her personal life, Bachauer married music conductor Alec Sherman, who became her manager. She died at the age of 63 at the Athens Festival.
Garrick Olaf Ohlsson is an American classical pianist. In 1970 Ohlsson became the first, and remains the only, competitor from the United States to win the gold medal awarded by the International Chopin Piano Competition, at the VIII competition. He also won first prize at the Busoni Competition in Bolzano, Italy and the Montreal Piano Competition in Canada. He was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and received the 1998 University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ohlsson has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards, winning one in 2008.
