Ses Balandres is a rocky cove with a very small beach on the western seaboard of the Spanish island of Ibiza. [1] It is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) directly north of the village of Santa Agnès de Corona within the municipality of Sant Antoni de Portmany. [2]

Ibiza is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain. It is 150 kilometres from the city of Valencia. It is the third largest of the Balearic Islands, an autonomous community of Spain. Its largest settlements are Ibiza Town, Santa Eulària des Riu, and Sant Antoni de Portmany. Its highest point, called Sa Talaiassa, is 475 metres above sea level.

Description

The beach in this rocky cove is probably the most difficult beach to access on the whole of the island. To reach it you must negotiate a rickety wooden ladder [3] and then clamber down a rocky slope [3] with the help of a rope installed by the local fishermen. This route was christened Heaven’s Gate [3] by Hippies in years gone by. Visitors will understand why once they have made this tricky descent as the cove is a secluded, spectacular place. Once at the shoreline the horseshoe shaped cove’s cliffs tower above the very small strip of sand and pebbles. The rock formations in the cliff face are in layers which were formed by layers of sediment laid down between 65 and 195 million years. Surprisingly, given the difficulty in getting here, local fishermen have built sheds and slipways here, [4] by building simple walls across the natural caves at the base of these cliffs.

Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of mineral or organic particles on the floor of oceans or other bodies of water at the Earth's surface. Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause these particles to settle in place. The particles that form a sedimentary rock are called sediment, and may be composed of geological detritus (minerals) or biological detritus. Before being deposited, the geological detritus was formed by weathering and erosion from the source area, and then transported to the place of deposition by water, wind, ice, mass movement or glaciers, which are called agents of denudation. Biological detritus was formed by bodies and parts of dead aquatic organisms, as well as their fecal mass, suspended in water and slowly piling up on the floor of water bodies. Sedimentation may also occur as dissolved minerals precipitate from water solution.

Ses Margalides

Just of the shoreline in the middle of the cove are the rocks of Ses Margalides. The rocks have formed a low sea arch, a popular place for diving. Stronger swimmers can swim out to the rocks, but only in good calm sea conditions. [4]

Port de Sant Miguel is a small beach resort with a white sandy beach on the north west coast of Ibiza. This small settlement was once the fisherman’s port for the nearby village of Sant Miquel de Balansat. The resort is situated in a small sheltered inlet surrounded by steep cliffs which are topped with pine woodland and scrub. At the head of the cove is a small sandy beach. Behind the beach there are a number of shops, bars and restaurants. Beyond the commercial area and set on the side of the inlet there are several large hotels and apartment developments as well as some private residential property.

Sant Agustí des Vedrà is a small village in the West of the Spanish island of Ibiza. The village is in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia and is located on designated road PM803. The village is 11.5 miles (18.5 km) North West of Ibiza Town and 9 miles (14 km) from Ibiza Airport. 3.3 kilometres (2.1 mi) to the North East of the village is the coastal town of Sant Antoni de Portmany.

Platja Es Pinet is in a small cove within the bay of Sant Antoni Bay. The beach is on the northern seaboard of the Spanish island of Ibiza. Although it is but a short distance from Sant Antoni, It is in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia. Platja Es Pinet is 11.9 miles (19.2 km) north west of Ibiza town, and 2.9 miles (4.7 km) west around the bay from Sant Antoni.In 2012 Platja Es Pinet is one of the 12 blue flag beaches on the island. The beach sand is soft and the water is safe, clean, and shallow.

Platja Port d’es Torrent beach in Spain

Port d’es Torrent is in a small cove within the bay of Sant Antoni Bay. The beach is on the northern seaboard of the Spanish island of Ibiza. Although it is but a short distance from Sant Antoni, it is in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia. Cala d'Albarca is a cove on the northern seaboard of the Spanish island of Ibiza. The cove is situated within the municipality Sant Antoni de Portmany. It is 4.0 miles (6.4 km) north east of the village of Santa Agnès de Corona and 14.0 miles (22.5 km) north of Ibiza Town.

Cala Benirrás

Cala Benirrás is a beach in the northern seaboard of the Spanish island of Ibiza. It is in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja and is 4.6 miles (7.4 km) east of the village of Sant Joan de Labritja and 4.6 miles (7.4 km) north north east of the village of Sant Miquel de Balansat.
