Associazione Sportiva Roma, commonly referred to as Roma, is a professional football club based in Rome, Italy. Founded by a merger in 1927, Roma has participated in the top tier of Italian football for all of its existence, except for the 1951–52 season. Roma has won Serie A three times, in 1941–42, 1982–83 and 2000–01, as well as nine Coppa Italia titles and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. In European competitions, Roma won the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2021–22 and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1960–61, while they finished runners-up in the 1983–84 European Cup, the 1990–91 UEFA Cup and the 2022–23 UEFA Europa League.
Marcos Evangelista de Morais, known as Cafu, is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as a right-back. Known for his pace and energetic attacking runs along the right flank, he is regarded as one of the greatest full-backs of all time, one of the best defenders ever to play in Serie A, and as one of the greatest Brazilian and South American players of his generation. He is also the most-capped player for the Brazil national team with 142 appearances.
Simone Perrotta is an Italian former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Throughout his career, he stood out for his work-rate, energy, and box-to-box play as a ball-winner in the midfield area. After initially playing for Italian sides Reggina, Juventus, Bari, and Chievo, Perrotta went on to spend most of his career with Serie A club Roma, until his retirement on 29 June 2013; he won consecutive Coppa Italia titles with the club in 2007 and 2008, as well as the 2007 Supercoppa Italiana.

Roberto Pruzzo is an Italian former football player and coach who played as a forward. He represented Italy at UEFA Euro 1980. A prolific goalscorer, Pruzzo was considered one of the best Italian forwards of his generation, and he is regarded as one of Roma's greatest players. He was known as a physically strong and hard-working centre-forward throughout his career, with good technique, link-up play, hold-up play, and an eye for goal, but was renowned in particular for his heading accuracy, elevation, and ability in the air.

Associazione Sportiva Roma did not manage to repeat its successful previous two seasons, and instead took a step back to seventh in the league championship. New coach Sven-Göran Eriksson was soon to get to grips with Italian football, with Roma improving the next year to be a force for the title.
Associazione Sportiva Roma had a successful season, in which Sven-Göran Eriksson's typical Scandinavian tactical approach was able to improve Roma's fortunes to a level where they once again fought for the league title. They also won the Coppa Italia, but the chance of a double disappeared in a 3–2 loss at home to bottom side Lecce, which all but secured Juventus's title. The most important part in Roma's revival was an efficient midfield with several top-class players in addition to striker Roberto Pruzzo, with several playmakers providing multiple assists to league topscorer Pruzzo.
A.S. Roma dropped off the pace of the top teams during the 1986–87 season, which ended Sven-Göran Eriksson's first Italian employment prematurely. From being the top scoring team in the season before, Roma struggled with finding the back of the net, resulting in worsened results.
Piacenza Calcio did not manage to renew their stay in Serie A, in the club's debut season at the top level of Italian football. The performance from the team was not too poor however, considering it was only a point from the 14th place that would have kept Piacenza up.
Piacenza Calcio managed to secure a penultimate-round survival in their second attempt to establish themselves in Serie A. Much thanks to the presence of 14-times goal scorer Nicola Caccia and creative midfielder Gianpietro Piovani, plus a tight defensive line, Piacenza had five points in hand to the relegated Bari.
Piacenza Calcio once again survived in Serie A, this time being on the brink of relegation, and having to beat Cagliari in Naples in a so-called spareggio to decide which team would stay up. Thanks to a 3–1 victory, Piacenza was able to hang onto their Serie A status, which was all that could be expected from new coach Bortolo Mutti. Despite losing Nicola Caccia to Napoli, Piacenza was able to count on a reliable goal scorer in Pasquale Luiso, who grabbed 14 goals in his debut season in Serie A.
