Shammi Rana is a promoter of Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) from India. He was appointed Secretary-General of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) at the 4th UNESCO Collective Consultation of Traditional Sports and Games. [1] [2] [3] Shammi Rana was also appointed Rapporteur of Traditional Sports and Games by UNESCO in the 3rd Collective Consultation on the Safeguarding and Promotion of Traditional Sports and Games 2017. Shammi Rana held several positions at various sports organizations worldwide. In 2020, he was honored with a Presidential Award in the USA. [6] Shammi Rana was elected as Secretary-General of Asian Jujitsu and Belt Wrestling Federation in 2009 [7] and attended the 1st Indoor Asian Martial Arts Games as Referee for Ju-jitsu. [8] [9] In 2016, he attended World Martial Arts Masterships as Technical Director for Belt Wrestling. [10] [11] [12]
Shammi has made a lot of effort to promote Traditional Sports Games in UNESCO. He has met with many officials from different countries to promote TSG. He participated in the Canadian parliament and was assured their support for TSG. [13] He visited South Korea with Khalil Ahmed, chairman of the Advisory Committee of TSG UNESCO, and held a meeting with Korean authority authorities for their support and sponsorship of Traditional Sports and Games. [14]
In Africa, he met Sierra Leone deputy sports minister Kai Lawrence Mbayo. Shammi explained the importance of Traditional Sports and the deputy minister assured them of his full support. [15]
He met with Erin Bromaghim, Director of Olympic and Paralympic Development in Los Angeles. Shammi proposed that Traditional Sports and Games should be included in the Olympics 2028, which will be held in Los Angeles. [16] Because of his efforts, the first Worldwide Traditional Sports and Games will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan. [17]
He and Hari Banaag, members of the advisory committee of TSG UNESCO, met with Congressman Terrance John Cox and emphasized founding a Pan-America Traditional Sports and Games Headquarters in Delano, California. [18]
He, accompanied by Vansh Rana from the ICTSG USA youth committee and Sartaj Singh Sekhon from the ICTSG USA advisory committee, meets with Mike Levin, U.S. Representative for California's 49th congressional district, to seek support for safeguarding Traditional Sports and Games. [19]

Belt wrestling is a form of wrestling that is one of the oldest historically recorded sports. It involves two belted contestants aiming to take each other over by grappling with a belt. There are hundreds of national belt wrestling styles, but contemporary most widespread and internationally competed are Alysh and Kurash, developed by the previously nomadic Turkic peoples of Central Asia. United World Wrestling recognized Alysh wrestling as the primary international belt wrestling style. It is regulated globally by the International Federation of Wrestling on Belts Alysh, the sport's governing body. Although the sport has been practiced for millennia, and local championships were held in various places of the world, it was until 2001 when Bayaman Erkinbayev started its international version, and it was called "Alysh". Until 2005, Rif Gaynanov and Bayaman Erkinbayev developed this style together, and then the ways separated. Two different styles appeared named "Alysh" and "Kurash" belt wrestling. Since then, the sport has been included in the 2013 Summer Universiade program, recognized by the Asian Olympic Council, and contested at the Asian Games and Asian Indoor Games. The sport's executives struggle to promote it to the level of an official Olympic sport.

The Silambam Asia (SILA) is the official international body of Silambam for the Continent of Asia and a Non-Governmental Organization recognized by the World Silambam Association (WSA). On November 22, 1999, the primary name of Silambam, which originated from the ancient Tamil Nadu State of India, was documented by Guruji Murugan Chillayah to become the official organization name to provide Indian traditional arts and sports for education, health, fitness, culture, nature, climate change, recreation, and dissemination work. The primary name Silambam was legally registered and recognized as a formalized organization after receiving security clearance approval from the Regulatory Authority. It was followed by the formation of Silambam Asia, registered with members from twelve countries on the Asia continent and officially recognized by the United Nations, which has expanded and grown further throughout the Asia continent and worldwide. Silambam Asia (SILA) is in partnership with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to preserve and safeguard the Indian traditional arts, sports, cultural and educational content within Silambam at the regional or continental by the establishment of Silambam Asia with the Ministry of Home Affairs (JPPM) in Malaysia.

Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) are physical activities which were played for centuries by people around the world before the advent of modern sports. Many TSG's lost popularity or died off during the colonial era due to the imposition and spread of Western sports. Further decline has occurred in the post-colonial era.
