Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh (born 17 July 1986) is an Indian Para swimmer. He is currently ranked number 1 by the World Para Swimming (WPS) in men's 100 m butterfly (S5 category) and men's 50 m breastroke (SB4 category) as on 2 February 2024. [1]

Early life and education

Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh was born in Rathaus Village, Madhubani District, Bihar, and later moved to Mumbai with his family. At the age of 24, he developed a benign tumour in his lower back which immobilized his lower half due to unsuccessful surgeries. [2] He lives in Dharavi, Mumbai and holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Rizvi College of Engineering and MBA from Sathyabama University, Chennai [3]

Swim career

Aalam won four gold medals at the Indian Open Para Swimming Championship in 2018, and a bronze medal at the 2016 Can-Am Para Swimming Championships held in Gatineau, Quebec. [4] He also represented India at the World Para Swimming Championship Maderia Portugal 2022 & 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. [5] He is also received Best Sportsperson with Disability Award by the president of India on 3 December 2021 [6] [7]

Athletic career

Aalam was interested in karate and participated in state and national karate events before 2010. After his surgery, he started to train as a swimmer. [8] He won a total of 15 medals at the 12th to 17th Indian National Para Swimming Championship, and was selected for the Indian contingent for the 2018 Asian Para Games to participate at the S5 category for 50M and 100M Butterfly and Freestyle and various other categories. [9] Aalam won Bronze at the 2016 Can-Am Para Swimming Championships held in Gatineau, Quebec in the men's 100m Breaststroke SB4 category. [ citation needed ]

In the 20th National Para-Swimming Championship, Shams won gold medals in 50m butterfly and 150m medley categories along with one silver in 100m freestyle. [10] [11]

Awards

Aalam Shaikh was awarded best emerging leader in disability sports and sports diplomacy by the U.S. Department of state global sports mentoring program 2018. [12] [13] His interview with Kiran Rai for the 300 most influential people in Asia 2020 was published by The New York Press News Agency. [14] [15] He was awarded the role model state award for the empowerment of Persons with Disabilities by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Bihar [16] on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2020. He also got the best international athlete of the year 2020 by Bihar Para Sports Association. [ citation needed ]

Records

On 8 April 2017, he swam 8 km in 4 hours at Candolim Beach, Goa. [17] [18] This was the world record for longest open sea swimming by a paraplegic person. [19] [20]

Theresa Goh Rui SiBBM is a Singaporean swimmer and Paralympic medalist, with a bronze at the SB4 100m breaststroke at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. She holds the world records for the SB4 50 metres and 200 metres breaststroke events.

This class includes a number of different disabilities including people with amputations and cerebral palsy. The classification is governed by the International Paralympic Committee, and competes at the Paralympic Games.

S5, SB4, SM5 are disability swimming classifications used for categorizing swimmers based on their level of disability. The class includes people with a moderate level of disability, and includes people with full use of their arms and hands, but limited to no use of their trunk and legs. It also includes people with coordination problems. A variety of disabilities are represented by this class including people with cerebral palsy. The class competes at the Paralympic Games.

S3, SB2, SM3 are disability swimming classifications used for categorising swimmers based on their level of disability. People in this class have some arm and hand function, but no use of their trunk and legs. They have severe disabilities in all their limbs. Swimmers in this class have a variety of different disabilities including quadriplegia from spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy and multiple amputations.

Sharath M. Gayakwad is an Indian Paralympic swimmer from Bangalore. At the 2014 Asian Games, he broke P.T. Usha's record for most number of medals by an Indian at any multi-discipline Event by winning 6 medals. Coming from a modest financial background, he has over 30 international and 40 national medals to his credit, one of them being the bronze medal at the 2010 Asian Para Games. Alastair Smales was born on 8 May 1962, in Australia. He lost the use of his legs in 1992 becoming a paraplegic after a four-wheel drive he was fixing slipped off a jack and fell on him. Due to this injury, Smales is now classified a S6 wheelchair grade in swimming competitions.

Niranjan Mukundan is an Indian para-swimmer. He was crowned as the Junior World Champion in the year 2015.

Tully Alicia Jacqueline Kearney is a British Paralympic swimmer. Kearney competes in the S5/SB3 classification for swimmers with physical disabilities. She won Gold and Silver at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games setting World records in both the 50 m and 100 m freestyle. She has also won medals in four IPC Swimming World Championships winning Bronze in the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships, setting a British record; four Golds, a Silver and a Bronze in the 2015 World Championships setting three European records and becoming GB's highest medal earner of the Championships, and three Golds at the World Para Swimming Championships in 2019, setting three British records and two Championship records, repeating this in the 2022 World Championships in Madeira where she broke three World Records. Kearney also won Gold and Bronze at the World Para Swimming European Championships in 2018. Kearney is a multiple British, European and World record holder.

Antonios Tsapatakis is a Greek Paralympic swimmer. He became a T8-9 complete paraplegic after a spinal cord injury due to a motorbike accident in 2006. He competes in 100m breaststroke SB4 classification.
