Shane Clipfell (born August 29, 1963) [1] is the current head coach of the Western Michigan University women's basketball team. [2]

Career

He accepted the head coaching position at Western Michigan in April 2012. [3] Prior to Western Michigan he was on Suzy Merchant's staff at Eastern Michigan from 1998 to 2007 and Michigan State from 2007 to 2012. He was acting as the head coach for much of the 2006–07 season while Merchant was on maternity leave. [4] Early in his career he was an assistant coach and the head coach at Glen Oaks Community College and Colon High School. [5] He compiled a 58–35 overall record at Glen Oaks. [4] His 1997 team finished ranked #3 in the NJCAA and he was National District Coach of the Year. [5] He led the Colon Magi to seven league titles, a Final Four, and a 185–65 overall record in 11 total years at the helm and was Michigan Regional Coach of the Year in 1992, 1994 and 1995. He had previously played basketball and football at Colon High School. [9] [10]

While an assistant at Eastern Michigan he earned a bachelor's degree in communications. He and his wife, Connie, have two children. [1]

The Western Michigan Broncos football program represents Western Michigan University in the Football Bowl Subdivision of Division I and the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Western Michigan has competed in football since 1906, when they played three games in their inaugural season. In 1927, WMU joined four other schools to form the Michigan Collegiate Conference. Western Michigan then moved to its present conference in 1948. Prior to 1939, Western Michigan's athletic teams were known as the Hilltoppers.

The men's ice hockey team competes in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Herbert William "Buck" Read was an American basketball coach. He was the head coach for the Western Michigan Broncos men's basketball team from 1922 through 1949. He was also president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) from 1948 to 1949 and the chairman of its rules committee in 1937, 1938, and 1944.

The 2013 Western Michigan Broncos football team represented Western Michigan University (WMU) in the 2013 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They were led by first-year head coach P. J. Fleck and played their home games at Waldo Stadium as a member of the West Division of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). In 2013, the Broncos finished at 1–11, and last place in the MAC West division.

The 2016–17 Michigan State Spartans women's basketball team represented Michigan State University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Spartans, led by tenth-year head coach Suzy Merchant, played their home games at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan and were members of the Big Ten Conference. They finished the season 21–12, 9–7 in Big Ten play to finish in a tie for sixth place. In the Big Ten tournament, they beat Wisconsin and Michigan before losing in the semifinals to Maryland. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as a No. 8 seed where the lost in the First Round to Arizona State. Head Coach Suzy Merchant took a medical leave of absence of January 17, 2017 after fainting on the sidelines during a game against Illinois. She also missed the following game against Purdue days after fainting.

The Broncos finished the season 6–6, 4–4 to finish in fourth place in the West Division. Despite being bowl eligible, the Broncos did not receive an invite to a bowl game.

Kathy Beauregard is the former director of athletics for Western Michigan University. She previously served as an associate athletic director at Western Michigan University from 1989 to 1997, and as women's gymnastics head coach at Western Michigan University from 1980 to 1988. Beauregard graduated from Hope College with a bachelor's degree in 1979, and from Western Michigan University with a master's degree in 1981. Beauregard's hiring of football coach P. J. Fleck in 2013 propelled the Broncos football team to its greatest successes in program history, culminating in a 13–1 record in 2016 and berth in the 2017 Cotton Bowl. Beauregard retired as athletic director at Western Michigan on December 31, 2021.

Dwayne Stephens is an American basketball coach who is currently the men's head coach for the Western Michigan Broncos. Previously, he was an assistant and associate head coach at Michigan State for 19 years.

Jeff Thorne is an American football coach and former player. He was the offensive coordinator at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2022. Thorne served as the head football coach at North Central College from 2015 to 2021. He succeeded his father, John Thorne, and led the 2019 team to an NCAA Division III national title. Thorne played college football at Eastern Illinois University, starting at quarterback in the early 1990s. His son, Payton, is the current starting quarterback at Michigan State.

The 2022–23 Mid-American Conference women's basketball season is the season for Mid-American Conference women's basketball teams. It began with practices in October 2022, followed by the start of the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season in November. Conference play began in January 2023 and concluded in March 2023. The 2023 MAC tournament was held at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio for the 23rd consecutive season.

The 2022–23 Michigan State Spartans women's basketball team represented Michigan State University as a member of the Big Ten Conference during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Spartans, led by sixteenth year head coach Suzy Merchant, compiled a 16-14 record and finished in ninth place in the Big Ten. After an automobile crash and health concerns for Merchant, Dean Lockwood took over as the acting head coach on January 28. The Spartans were invited to the Women's National Invitation Tournament, but declined the invitation. Merchant resigned as head coach after the conclusion of the season.
