Shankar Nath Rimal (born 5 March 1935) is a Nepalese civil engineer and architect. He is best known for standardising the modern Nepalese flag. [1] [2] He has also designed many prominent buildings and monuments in Nepal. Sahid gate of Sundhara, Ramananda gate of Janakpur, Bhaleshwar temple of Chandragiri hill and Solatee hotel are some of the prominent structure he has designed.

Early life and education

He was born on 5 March 1935 (22 Falgun 1991 BS) in Tangal, Kathmandu to father Devendra Nath Rimal and mother Sita Devi Rimal. He received his primary education from Nandiratri School, Naxal and completed his SLC-level education from Durbar High School in 1950. He enrolled in Bengal Engineering College to study electrical engineering under Colombo plan but later shifted to civil engineering. He graduated in 1957. [3]

Career

He standardised the flag of Nepal in 1962 on the request of King Mahendra. He calculated the mathematical specifications required to draw the flag which was included in the-then constitution. [4] He designed multiple historical sites and monuments such as Shahid Gate, Solatee hotel, building of Nepal Academy, Nepal Art Council and many other government buildings. [5] He was involved in the design of Narayanhiti Palace which was designed by Benjamin Polk. [6] [7] He has designed various temples such as Bhaleshwor Mahadev, Vishnu temple in Singapore and Unmata Bhairav temple inside Pashupati temple complex.

He served as the president of Nepal Engineer's Association four times, in the 4th, 17th, 18th and 19th executive council. [8]

He was awarded with National Araniko Award, 2077 by Nepal Academy of Fine Arts in 2020 for his contribution to fine art. [9]

Personal life

He is married to Shashi Rimal. They have three children. [3]

Sahid Gate or Shahid Gate is a monument in Kathmandu, Nepal. The monument was inaugurated on 13 April 1961. As of 2016, there are five statues in the gate. Four men, namely Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Gangalal Shrestha, Dashrath Chand, and Shukraraj Shastri, who are considered martyrs since they stood against the 104-year-old Rana Regime, have their statues above their arms established here. On top of all is a statue of former King Tribhuvan, who, in B.S. 2007 cooperated with people to get democracy in the country. The gate was designed by Shankar Nath Rimal. King Mahendra inaugurated the monument and named it Nepal Smarak. However, people started calling it Shahid gate, a name by which it is presently called.

Rewati Raman Khanal was a Nepalese law scholar and writer. He served as the chief secretary of the Narayanhiti Palace for 35 years. He wrote multiple books on the legal and bureaucratic system of Nepal and receive the Madan Puraskar for his book Nepali Kanooni Itihasko Rooprekha in 2002.

Nepal Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) is the umbrella organization of Nepali artists, researchers and art critics, and an arts institution for research and for exhibitions. A museum in Kathmandu, in a neoclassical building from the 1930s, presents collections of both traditional and contemporary paintings and other works. It was formerly part of Nepal Academy. The Nepal Academy of Fine Arts has also published a number of books about art and Nepali artists.
