The film stars Suriya in dual lead roles as father and son, with Sameera Reddy, Simran and Divya Spandana in lead roles. The film features music composed by Harris Jayaraj, making Vaaranam Aayiram his last project with Menon before the formal break-up of their partnership, until they worked together again in Yennai Arindhaal (2015). Cinematography for the film has been handled by R. Rathnavelu and editing done by Anthony Gonsalvez.

Shanker Panicker is an Indian film actor, film director and film producer who has worked in Malayalam and Tamil films. Known mononymously as Shankar, he has acted in nearly 200 films and was a leading actor in Malayalam cinema during the 1980s and was also a lead youth hero in Tamil Cinema at that time. Shankar's debut Tamil film Oru Thalai Ragam, and Malayalam debut, Manjil Virinja Pookkal, completed a theatrical run of 365 and 250 days respectively. Aadanthe Ado Type is a 2003 Indian Telugu-language romance film directed by E V V Satyanarayana, starring Aryan Rajesh, Sivaji and Anita Hassanandani. It is a remake of the 2002 Tamil film Mounam Pesiyadhe written and directed by Ameer Sultan, with Aryan Rajesh, Anita, Shivaji, and Sindhu replacing Suriya, Trisha, Nandha, and Maha, respectively, who originally played the roles. The film released on 30 August 2003. There is also a dubbed Telugu version of Mounam Pesiyadhe, titled as Kanchu, which released in 2006.

Chittagong is a 2012 Indian historical war drama film directed by Bedabrata Pain. It stars Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role and is based upon events of British India's Chittagong Uprising. The film features music by trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy and sound by Resul Pookutty. The world premier of film was on 10 April 2012. Chittagong released on 12 October 2012 and nett grossed Rs 3.1 million at the Indian box office. This movie won the 60th National Film Awards for the Best Debut Film of a Director.

G. Keshava Pillai was an Indian actor and army and naval officer known for his work in Malayalam cinema. He was active for 65 years, acting in more than 325 Malayalam films, and is known for revolutionising the role of the antagonist in Indian cinema and television. Yatchan (transl. Wizard) is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language action comedy film co written, co-produced and directed by Vishnuvardhan. The film was produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur under UTV Motion Pictures. The film features Arya, Kreshna, Swati Reddy, and Deepa Sannidhi in the lead roles, while Adil Hussain, RJ Balaji, Thambi Ramaiah, and Ponvannan play supporting roles. The music was composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja with cinematography by Om Prakash and editing by Sreekar Prasad. The film released on 11 September 2015 to negative reviews and bombed at the box office.

Vivek Oberoi, Sudeepa, Shatrughan Sinha and Radhika Apte among several others reprise their roles from the prequel while also featuring Suriya and Priyamani.
