Shannon Rempel (born November 26, 1984) is a Canadian speed skater. [1] An Olympic silver medalist from the 2006 Winter Olympics in the team pursuit. [1] World Champion in the team pursuit from 2007 World Single Distance Championships, SLC, UT. [1] Rempel also participated in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, in the 500m, and 1000m distances. She specializes in the sprint and middle distances, capturing many podium finishes over the years at the World Cup events. Rempel is also known for her win as the 2003 World Junior Speed Skating Championships.

Previously she held the World Junior record in the 500m, and in the combined sprint distances. Currently she still holds the Canadian Jr. records in the 500m and 1000m. [1]

Shannon signed a flag which was brought up to the international space station.

Biography

Early life

Rempel was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was introduced to speed skating at age 10 [1] at the St. James Speed Skating Club when her friend suggested that she try it.

Kristina Nicole Groves is a Canadian retired speed skater. She is Canada's most decorated skater in the World Single Distances Championships with 13 career medals in this event. She won four Olympic medals: she won two silver medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, in the 1,500 meters and team pursuit, and she won the silver medal in the 1500 m event and the bronze medal in the 3000 m event at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

Christine Nesbitt is a Canadian retired long track speed skater who currently resides in Calgary, Alberta. She won the gold medal in the 1000 metres event at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. She had previously won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. She is also the 2011 sprint champion, 2012 1500 metres world champion, three-time world champion for 1000 metres, and three-time world champion for team pursuit. On 4 June 2015 she announced her retirement.

The 2013–14 ISU Speed Skating World Cup, officially the Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating 2013–2014, was a series of international speed skating competitions that ran the entire season. The season started on 8 November 2013 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and concluded with the final on 16 March 2014 in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Compared to previous seasons, there were fewer competition weekends; the season was restricted due to the 2014 Winter Olympics, which were arranged in Sochi, Russia, during February 2014. In total, six competition weekends were held at six different locations, twelve cups were contested, and 72 races took place.
