Shao Prefecture

Shaozhou or Shao Prefecture (邵州) was a zhou (prefecture) in imperial China centering on modern Shaoyang, Hunan, China. It existed (intermittently) from 636 to 1225.

Zhou were historical political divisions of China. Formally established during the Han dynasty, zhou exist continuously until the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912—a period of over 2000 years. Zhou were also previously used in Korea, Vietnam, and Japan.

The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty, during the king Wu Ding's reign, who was recorded as the twenty-first Shang king by the written records of Shang dynasty unearthed. Ancient historical texts such as the Records of the Grand Historian and the Bamboo Annals describe a Xia dynasty before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period, and Shang writings do not indicate the existence of the Xia. The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization.

Wugang is a county-level city in Hunan Province, China. It is under the administration of Shaoyang prefecture-level City. Located on the southwest of the province and middle of Shaoyang's jurisdiction, the city is bordered to the north by Dongkou and Longhui Counties, to the west by Suining County, to the southwest by Chengbu County, to the southeast by Xinning County, to the northeast by Shaoyang County. Wugang City covers 1,539 km² (594 sq mi), as of the 2010 census, the city had a registered population of 810,003 and a resident population of 734,870; In 2014, it had a registered population of 834,868 and a resident population of 759,312. The city has 4 subdistricts, 11 towns and 3 townships under its jurisdiction, the government seat is Shuiximen Subdistrict.

Xinning County is a county in the Province of Hunan, China, it is under the administration of Shaoyang City. Located on the south western margin of Hunan, the county is bordered to the northeast by Shaoyang County, to the northwest by Wugang City, to the west by Chengbu Autonomous County, to the south by Ziyuan County of Guangxi, to the east by Dong'an County. Xinning County covers 2,756.13 km² (1,064.15 sq mi), as of 2015, it had a registered population of 649,700 and a permanent resident population of 574,100. The county has 8 towns and 8 townships under its jurisdiction, the county seat is Jinshi (金石镇).

The airport received approval from the State Council of China and the Central Military Commission in July 2013. It is expected to cost 957 million yuan to build. The airport was opened on 28 June 2017, with an inaugural China Southern Airlines flight from Changsha Huanghua International Airport.
