Shaukat Mahmood (born 29 July 1959; also spelled as Shawkat Mahmud) is a Bangladeshi journalist and politician.
He was president of the National Press Club. [1]
At The 5th National Council of Bangladesh Nationalist Party on 8 December 2009, Shaukat Mahmood became an adviser to the party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. Later the party named him as a vice chairman of the 6th council in August 2016. [2]
Mahmood graduated from mass communication and journalism in the Dhaka University in 1980. He was awarded the fellowship of Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Boston. [3]
Mahmood's early career in journalism comprises his association as a senior staff reporter with one of the oldest left-leaning Bengali newspaper, The Sangbad . He also served as a senior journalist as well as in the panels of editorial of the dailies Dinkal, Amar Desh , Amader Shomoy and Matribhumi.[ citation needed ]
As a journalist Shaukat Mahmood presently serves as editor of Weekly Economic Times and has been an adviser of Channel One, which was shut down by the government on 27 April 2010. [4] Mahmood was elected as the general secretary of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) along with Ruhul A Gazi, special correspondent of The Daily Sangram , elected as the president. [5]
In 1990 Mahmood was elected as General Secretary of the National Press Club, Dhaka. He served two consecutive terms as the general secretary. Another two terms of his being GS came in 2002 and he again held the post until 2006. In 2007, Shaukat Mahmood was elected as the president of National Press Club. The tenure ended as he stepped aside from running in the immediate next election in 2011. Mahmood presently serves as the editor of 1995-established Weekly Economic Times. He is also actively serving as an adviser of the Weekly Ekhon editorial panel.[ citation needed ]
Mahmood's official entry into politics took place after the party's December 2008 council named him as an adviser to the chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.[ citation needed ]
[6] Upon the appointment, Mahmood actively took part in the grass-root conferences of the party in Khulna, Jessore, Barisal and Mymensingh. [7]
Mahmood was nominated as a vice-chairman of BNP at the 6th party council held in August 2016. [8]
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a major political party in Bangladesh. He was born on 20 November 1965, Tarique was involved in politics from a young age and rose to prominence in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) during his mother's tenure as prime minister in the early 2000s. In 2018, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for organising the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack.
M Ilias Ali was a Bangladeshi politician and member of the Jatiya Sangsad (2001–2006) representing the Sylhet-2 constituency. He served as the organising secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He, along with his personal car driver, Ansar Ali, went missing on 18 April 2012. Later that day, local police recovered his abandoned car near his residence in Banani neighborhood and found Ansar's cellphone inside. They have not been seen since. On the tenth anniversary of his disappearance, Netra News, an independent news platform in Sweden, reported on 21 April 2022, that Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), an elite Bangladeshi police unit, had carried out the disappearance. The platform cited leaked confidential documents and internal investigations documents from RAB to reach the conclusion.
The 5th National Council of Bangladesh Nationalist Party was the event for the topmost policy-making bodies and panels of leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party to get elected. According to the party constitution that was amended lastly on August 16, 2009, the panel of policy-making bodies and other administrative bodies will be active until a next council takes place and elects a new set of leaders to replace the existing one.

Abul Harris Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi and politician who served as the Political Secretary of Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He was the Joint Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Chowdhury was sentenced to 65 years in total and a life term in prison in absentia for allegedly committing multiple crimes. His party alleges the charges were falsely given, along with those against Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman, and many other senior party members.
