Shea & Gould was one of New York's best-known law firms. It was established as a result of a merger in 1964 between the firm Manning, Hollinger & Shea and Gallup, and the firm Climenko & Gould. Then in the 1970s the firm acquired several smaller niche practices in antitrust and other areas. It dissolved in 1994.

Offices

The firm once employed about 200 lawyers with offices in Washington, Albany, New York, Los Angeles, California, and London. The Los Angeles office was opened with the 1985 acquisition of 70-lawyer firm, Pacht Ross Warne Bernhardt & Sears, but it closed in 1989 due to weak earnings. A number of Shea & Gould's Los Angeles lawyers left in 1989 to open the office of the now-defunct New York City law firm Myerson & Kuhn. [1] An additional seven lawyers spun off from Shea & Gould in 1989 to found New York law firm Ingram Yuzek. [2]

Clients

Among the clients Shea & Gould represented were the New York Mets, the New York Yankees, Deloitte & Touche and the Marine Midland Bank. Some of its personal clients were Aristotle Onassis, New York's Mayor Abraham Beame and Reverend Sun Myung Moon. The firm was well known for its New York government relations practice, especially with the city's Democratic administrations in New York City and Albany.

Attorneys

The firm's attorneys included the former Governor of New York, Hugh Carey, who joined as of counsel, Wilbur D. Mills, a former U.S. Representative from Arkansas, former professional basketball player and Rhodes Scholar Heyward Dotson, and Jerome H. Kern, a founder of the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

Dissolution

In 1991, Shea died and the firm elected a new chairman of the firm, Thomas E. Constance, and soon after added new members to the firm's executive committee. But the larger committee created tensions until they voted on January 27, 1994, to dissolve the firm by March 31 due to irreconcilable differences. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Thelen LLP, formerly known as Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner was a bicoastal American law firm formed by two mergers between California and New York–based law firms. The firm peaked at roughly 600 attorneys in 2006, and had 500 early in 2008, with attorneys with offices in eight cities in the United States, England and China. By the time of its decision to dissolve in late October 2008, it had shrunk to 400 attorneys through layoffs and attrition. Thelen was known for its preeminent construction practice which dates back to the 1930s and the local association between the law firm and contractors and developers of large hydroelectric dam projects. The construction practice offered regulatory, transactional and dispute resolution support. It was also known for its energy expertise, particularly in the electricity regulatory area, as well as for legal advice concerning technology and outsourcing.

Finley, Kumble, Wagner, Heine, Underberg, Manley, Myerson & Casey, also known as Finley, Kumble, was a United States law firm founded in 1968. The firm, based in New York, had grown from eight lawyers at its inception to over 700 lawyers at the time of its bankruptcy and dissolution in 1987. Myerson & Kuhn was a New York–based law firm that operated from 1988 to 1990. It was formed by name partners Bowie Kuhn and Harvey D. Squadron, Ellenoff, Plesent & Sheinfeld was a New York City-based law firm that practiced from 1970 to 2002 when it merged with Washington, D.C.-based Hogan & Hartson, when the Squadron Ellenoff name was discontinued.

Carl Edwin Douglas is an American civil rights, wrongful death, personal injury, employment, and criminal defense attorney specializing in police misconduct cases. He is best known for being one of the defense attorneys in the O. J. Simpson murder case, who were collectively dubbed the "Dream Team". Ingram Yuzek Gainen Carroll & Bertolotti, LLP was a law firm based in New York City. Ingram Yuzek Gainen Carroll & Bertolotti, LLP was founded in 1989 when five partners spun off from New York law firm Shea & Gould. Ingram Yuzek has more than 30 lawyers practicing in 15 practice areas.
