Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh (born 19 November 1971) [2] is a Bangladeshi politician and current Mayor of South Dhaka. He previously served as a Member of the Jatiya Sangsad for Dhaka-10 and Dhaka-12 from the Bangladesh Awami League. [3]
Taposh was born in 19 November 1971 to Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani and Arzu Moni. [4] His parents were both assassinated on 15 August 1975 in a military coup that also killed Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other members of his family. Taposh and his elder brother Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash survived. [5]
Taposh was elected to the Jatiya Sangsad in the 2008 Bangladeshi General Election from the Dhaka-12 constituency. [6]
Taposh's vehicle was subjected in a bomb attack on 21 October 2009. The incident resulted in property damage and injuries to thirteen individuals. [7]
In the 2014 general election, he was elected unopposed to represent the Dhaka-10 constituency. [8]
In 2015, his rally was the target of a bomb attack. [9]
In 2018 election, he was elected as member of parliament for a third consecutive time.
In 2020, he won the Dhaka Mayoral Election and became the mayor of Dhaka South. He got the status of full minister from 8 August 2022 along with DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam.[ citation needed ]
Taposh called for the trial of Mahfuz Anam for supporting the military backed caretaker government. [10] He has criticized Rapid Action Battalion over extra judicial killings. [11]
Bangladesh elects on national level a legislature with one house or chamber. The unicameral Jatiyo Sangshad, meaning national parliament, has 350 members of which 300 members are directly elected through a national election for a five-year term in single-seat constituencies while 50 memberships are reserved for the women who are selected by the ruling party or coalition. The Prime Minister is the head of the government. The president who is the head of the state is elected by the National Parliament. The president of Bangladesh is a ceremonial post and does not exercise any control over the running of the state.
The Jatiya Party is a centre-right, conservative, nationalist political party in Bangladesh and is currently the main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad, against the Awami League. The current chairman of the party is Ghulam Muhammed Quader. On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. However, the party backtracked the next day and announced that it intended to remain part of the opposition. Currently, it holds Rangpur out of Bangladesh's 12 city corporations. The current chairperson of the party is Ghulam Muhammed Quader MP.
Mohammed Nasim was a Bangladesh Awami League politician who served as Bangladesh's Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Health and Family Welfare during 1999–2001 and 2014–2019, respectively. He was a 6-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Sirajganj-1 and Sirajganj-2 constituencies. He was a presidium member of Awami League and the spokesperson of the 14-party alliance.
Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was a Bangladeshi politician. He was one of the nephews of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. He was the founder of Mujib Bahini Bangladesh Liberation Force-BLF one of the major guerrilla forces of the Bangladesh Liberation War and also the founder of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the youth wing of Bangladesh Awami League.
Tofail Ahmed is a Bangladeshi politician. He is a 7-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Bhola-1, Bhola-2 and Bakerganj-1 constituencies since 1973. Previously he served as the Minister of Commerce and Minister of Industries of the Government of Bangladesh.
Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) was the former self-governing corporation that was entrusted with the task of administering the municipal affairs of Dhaka. The incorporated area was divided into several wards. Each ward has an elected ward commissioner. The mayor of the city was elected by popular vote every five years, although the last mayoral election took place in 2002. The corporation was dissolved by the Local Government Amendment Bill 2011 on 29 November, passed in the Parliament of Bangladesh, and formally ceased to exist on 1 December 2011, following the President's approval, making way for a Dhaka North and a Dhaka South city corporations.
Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim is a Bangladeshi politician who is a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Gopalganj-2 constituency since 1991. He is a member of the standing committee of Bangladesh Awami League party. He also served as the minister of Health and Family Welfare during 1999–2001.
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was another landslide victory for the Awami League-led Grand Alliance led by Sheikh Hasina. The elections were marred by violence, and were widely considered by opposition politicians and the international community to be rigged.

The result was a victory for the Awami League candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh. Ishraque Hossain of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party received the second highest number of votes.
