Shelby Johnson (known as Shelby J.) is an American singer/songwriter. She is known for her work with her mentor, Prince, and her debut solo album 10 in 2017. [1]

Career

Shelby J. began performing in 1994 in North Carolina. She reached a worldwide audience with her mix of gospel, R&B, funk, and soul. She performed alongside and collaborated with musical greats, including Carlos Santana, Roy Hargrove, Mary J. Blige, Jonathan Timber, Joel Henry Kiser, Larry Graham, Anthony Hamilton and D’Angelo. She performed on Kmart’s “Right Here, Right Now” marketing campaign, covering the Jesus Jones song. [2]

She joined the New Power Generation in 2006, and contributed to a number of Prince projects, including Planet Earth, 20Ten , and LotusFlow3r. Her largest input was in the posthumous album Welcome 2 America, in which she led vocals and raps on a number of tracks. Prince helped her learn how to lead a band, produce her own music, and succeed as a solo artist, and when they parted ways, told her “don’t come back without that record”. [3]

In December 2012, Shelby J released a single called "North Carolina", featuring Anthony Hamilton. [4]

In January 2017, single “Good 2 Know” was released to promote her then unnamed album 10. [5] [6]

In April 2017, Shelby J released 10 with ten songs, along with skits and a spoken word poem recited by her niece. [7]

In December 2018, Shelby J. released "God is Here". While a gospel song, Shelby said she wanted to “paint with all the colors in the box". [8] [9]

In January 2019, Shelby J was featured on the song "Disco Dislocation", alongside Liv Warfield, from Ida Neilsen’s album Time 2 Stop Worrying. [10]

"The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" is a song by American musician Prince, released in various forms on the 1994 remixes EP The Beautiful Experience and later on his seventeenth album, The Gold Experience (1995). In his singles chronology, it was his third major release since changing his stage name to an unpronounceable "Love Symbol". In his albums chronology, it along with the EP was his second release after changing his name. With the consent of Prince's usual record distributor Warner Bros. Records, the song was released by NPG Records in North America and Edel Music in the rest of the world and independently distributed by Bellmark Records in the USA, under the control and guidance of Music of Life, as a one-off single, topping five different charts. It also remains Prince's only number one single on the UK Singles Chart, and was shortly followed by the release of The Beautiful Experience that also charted on No. 18 in the UK. The version that was released on The Gold Experience is a different mix of the song.

The Definition Of... is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Fantasia. It was released by RCA Records and 19 Recordings on July 29, 2016 in the United States and for online streaming worldwide on Apple Music a day earlier. Fantasia worked with producers Ron Fair, Brian Kennedy, Neff-U, Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon and GRADES on the album. The album featured two top ten singles on the US Billboard Adult R&B Songs airplay chart: "No Time for It", which peaked at number six, and "Sleeping with the One I Love" which peaked at number nine. In order to further promote the album, Fantasia embarked on a tour with Anthony Hamilton called Fantasia & Anthony Hamilton: Live in Concert. The Definition Of... received mixed to positive reviews from music critics. The album peaked at number six on the US Billboard 200. The album also topped that week's Billboard Top R&B Albums chart, and peaked at number two on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
