Shetland HVDC Connection is a high-voltage direct current submarine power cable under construction to connect Shetland to the British mainland.
In April 2022, the project was described as "on track to be completed by 2024". [1]
The subsea cable installation is ongoing, and expected to continue until 2023. [2]
The interconnector starts at the Upper Kergord Valley converter station in Shetland. From the converter station an underground cable runs to a landing area in Weisdale Voe. From there, a subsea cable runs to landfall at Noss Head in Caithness, with onward connection to an HVDC switching station north of the village of Staxigoe in Caithness. [3] [4]
The route of the cable crosses TAT-10, TAT-14 and Atlantic Crossing 1 telecommunication cables and the Piper–Flotta oil pipeline. [5]
The interconnector will connect to the existing 320 kV Caithness - Moray Link to form a three terminal HVDC network, with converter stations at Spittal in Caithness; Blackhillock Substation in Moray; and Upper Kergord on Shetland. The Shetland leg will have a power rating of 600 MW; [6] the Spittal and Blackhillock converters are rated at 800 MW and 1,200 MW respectively. [7] This will be the first multi-terminal HVDC interconnection in Europe. [8]
The project is being developed by Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission, a subsidiary of SSE plc.
It is estimated that it will cost more than £600 million. [9] Another source stated cost of £660 million. [1]
The project is needed for development of Shetland's renewable energy potential and it is necessary for the projects such as the Viking Wind Farm and the Aegir wave farm. [10] [11]
It also contributes to the security of Shetland's electricity supply, [9] especially as Lerwick Power Station is nearing the end of its operational life. [12]
The project was proposed in 2007. [5] In January 2008, the report published by the Crown Estate found the project would be "economically and technically possible". [13] At the same year, Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission filed planning application and started public consultations. [14]
Originally, the cable was planned to run from Shetland to 320 km (200 miles) to Portgordon on the Scottish mainland, [14] [15] [16] and then on to Blackhillock substation, near Keith, Moray via 25 km (16-mile) underground cable. [14] [16] However, the end point was moved to Caithness, and the remaining part of the connection was constructed separately as the Caithness - Moray Link. [3]
In 2019, Ofgem announced that it was minded to authorise construction, subject to the Viking windfarm winning a CfD contract in the government auction held in September 2019. Viking Energy was unsuccessful in this auction, putting the future of the interconnector in doubt. [17] [18]
SSEN submitted a revised proposal in January 2020. Ofgem carried out a final consultation on this revised proposal, and concluded in April 2020 that it would grant conditional approval for the link, conditional on Ofgem receiving sufficient evidence by the end of 2020 that the 457 MW Viking Wind Farm project is likely to go ahead. In April 2020, Ofgem approved revised proposals for the project, subject to "evidence that the Shetland Viking Wind Farm project will go ahead". [6]
On 17 June 2020, the Viking Wind Farm sponsor, SSE Renewables, made a final investment decision to proceed with the wind farm investment, conditional on certain industry code modifications, and "the outcome of the consultation on Ofgem’s minded-to position to approve the transmission link, expected in July 2020". [19] According to Shetland News, this meant that both the Windfarm and the HVDC Connection were "likely to go ahead". [20]
On 16 July 2020, Ofgem gave final approval for the connection. [21]
Contracts for construction were awarded in August 2020. [2]
In February 2022, Hitachi Energy started the process of installing HVDC equipment at Kergord. [22]
Installation of the subsea cable started in July 2022. [23]
The National Grid is the high-voltage electric power transmission network serving Great Britain, connecting power stations and major substations, and ensuring that electricity generated anywhere on the grid can be used to satisfy demand elsewhere. The network serves the majority of Great Britain and some of the surrounding islands. It does not cover Northern Ireland, which is part of the Irish single electricity market.

Spittal is a small hamlet in Caithness, Scottish Highlands and is in the Scottish council area of Highland. Spittal lies 9 miles (14 km) south of Thurso, and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of Mybster. The main A9 road runs past Spittal.

The Aegir wave farm was a planned wave farm off the south west of Shetland. The project was developed by Aegir Wave Power, a 2009 formed joint venture of Vattenfall and the wave power technology developer Pelamis Wave Power. The wave farm would have had capacity from 10 MW potentially up to 100 MW. Following the collapse of Pelamis in November 2014, the project was cancelled by Vattenfall in February 2015.
Viking Wind Farm is a large on-shore wind farm under construction in the Shetland Islands which is being developed by Viking Energy, a partnership between Shetland Islands Council and SSE plc. When complete, it will have a generation capacity of 443 MW.
The Western HVDC Link is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) undersea electrical link in the United Kingdom, between Hunterston in Western Scotland and Flintshire Bridge in North Wales, routed to the west of the Isle of Man. It has a transmission capacity of 2,250 MW and became fully operational in 2019.
COBRAcable is a ±320 kV, 700 MW HVDC submarine power cable pair between Eemshaven, the Netherlands and Endrup near Esbjerg, Denmark. The cable is jointly owned by Energinet.dk and TenneT. Its purpose is to improve the European transmission grid and thus increase the amount of variable wind power in the system while improving supply reliability. Its 700 MW capacity corresponds to an annual transmission capacity of 6.1 TWh.

Stornoway power station, also known as Battery Point Power Station, is an electrical generation facility in Stornoway, Scotland. It was commissioned in 1954 to supply power to the Western Isles and currently comprises eight Mirrlees Blackstone, medium speed, diesel generators with a combined output of 25.5MW. The station is owned and operated by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) part of SSE plc. The Western Isles power network was originally operated independently of the Scottish mainland network.
NeuConnect is an HVDC submarine power cable under construction between England and Germany.
The Caithness–Moray Link is a 160 km (100-mile) HVDC submarine power cable beneath the Moray Firth in Scotland, linking Spittal in Caithness and Blackhillock in Moray. Constructed by Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, it is capable of transmitting up to 1,200 MW of power. It was officially completed in January 2019, under budget at a cost of £970 million, and was reported as the largest single investment in the northern Scottish electricity network since the 1950s.
The Western Isles HVDC connection is a proposed 1.8GW HVDC submarine power cable to connect the Isle of Lewis to the Scottish mainland.
Eastern HVDC and Eastern HVDC projects are the names used by Ofgem for two planned HVDC submarine power cables from the East coast of Scotland to Northeast England to strengthen the National Grid. The two links combined will deliver 4 GW of renewable energy from Scottish wind farms to England.
