David Shiel Wood Jr. (born August 26, 1982) is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Early life and playing career

Wood attended Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he played football, basketball, and ran track. [1] He was an all-area and all-academic selection while catching 46 passes for 538 yards and five touchdowns as a senior. He also lettered in track and basketball.

Wood played wide receiver at Wofford from 2001 to 2005 and was the leading receiver on the Terriers’ 2003 squad that won the SoCon championship and advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA semifinals. [2]

Coaching career

Woodruff High School

Wood began coaching in 2006 at Woodruff High School, where he helped lead the Wolverines to a 9–3 record, regional championship and state playoff berth. [2]

Wofford

Wood spent a total of eight seasons as an assistant coach at Wofford. [3] He served as the wide receivers coach from 2007-2010 and coached two student-athletes that went on to play in the National Football League, including former Carolina Panthers receiver Brenton Bersin. [2]

In 2011, Wood moved to the defensive side of the ball where he served as the safeties coach for the next two years before stepping away from coaching to raise his two daughters. [3] [4] [5]

In 2016, Wood returned to the Wofford coaching staff as a safeties coach and also served as the recruiting coordinator. [3] The next year, Wood also took on the role of defensive coordinator. [1] As Wofford's defensive coordinator, Wood directed a unit that ranked second in the Southern Conference and 26th in NCAA Division I FCS in total defense in 2017, allowing just 326.7 yards per game. [2] The defensive effort helped lead Wofford to a 10–3 overall record, the outright SoCon championship (7–1 in league play) and an FCS quarterfinal appearance, where it fell to eventual national champion North Dakota State. In all, Wofford won four SoCon titles and advanced to the FCS playoffs seven times in Wood's eight seasons on the Terriers’ staff. [2] [6]

Georgia Tech

On January 12, 2018, Wood joined Georgia Tech's coaching staff as a safeties coach. [2] He helped them to an appearance in the 2018 Quick Lane Bowl. [7]

Georgia State

Wood was named Georgia State's inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator in January 2019, and helped lead them to a 7–6 record and an Arizona Bowl appearance. [7]

Army

In 2020, Wood was hired as the co-defensive coordinator for the Army Black Knights. [8] In addition to his co-defensive coordinator duties with the Black Knights, Wood coached the Army inside linebackers in 2020 before transitioning to coaching the safeties in 2021. [3]

Troy

Wood was hired as Troy's defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2022. [6]  In his lone year there, the Trojans defense was ranked eighth nationally in points allowed and helped the team compile a 12–2 record, highlighted by a Sun Belt Conference championship and win in the 2022 Cure Bowl over UTSA. [9]

Tulane

Following an outstanding season at Troy, Wood was hired to serve as the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator for the Tulane Green Wave. [10] He helped lead them to an 11–2 record, capped off by an appearance in the 2023 Military Bowl. As a result of his excellent performance, Wood was nominated for the Broyles Award, though he did not win it. [11]

Personal life

Wood met his wife Bernadette, a soccer student-athlete, at Wofford. [12] They married in June 2010. [1] The couple have two daughters, Fay and Grace. [12] From 2013–2015, Wood chose to leave coaching to be a stay-at-home dad while his wife began her medical residency. [5] [10]

Wood served as camp director for the Mike Ayers Football Camps for five years. [1]

Foster's 2005 and 2006 Hokie defenses led the nation in total defense. Foster is regarded as one of the best defensive coordinators in college football. On August 1, 2019, Foster announced he was retiring at the end of the 2019 season.

The Wofford Terriers are the athletic teams that represent the Wofford College, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in intercollegiate sports at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the Southern Conference since the 1997–98 academic year. Wofford and the other SoCon members play football in the Football Championship Subdivision. Prior to the 1995–96 year, the Terriers played in Division II in all sports, and until the 1988–89 period, Wofford's athletic teams were members of the NAIA. The football team plays in Gibbs Stadium. The basketball teams moved to the new Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for the 2017–18 season.

Mike Ayers is a former American football coach. He served as the head football coach at East Tennessee State University from 1985 to 1987 and Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina from 1988 to 2017, compiling career college football coaching record of 218–160–2. Ayers' Wofford Terriers won five Southern Conference title, in 2003, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2017.

Dean Scott Hood is an American former college football coach who currently works as the director of player development at the University of Kentucky. He was the head football coach at Murray State University from 2020 to 2023 and at Eastern Kentucky University from 2008 to 2015. His inaugural 2008 season ended successfully as he led the Colonels to the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference football title.

The Wofford Terriers football program is the intercollegiate American football team for Wofford College located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. He previously held the same position at Wofford from 2000 to 2012, and at Appalachian State from 2013 to 2017. In 2015, he was nominated for the Broyles Award. He is a graduate of T. L. Hanna High School.

William Geoffrey Collins is an American college football coach and former player. He is currently serving as the defensive coordinator at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to the Tar Heels, he was head coach at Georgia Tech from December 7, 2018, to September 25, 2022. He was previously the head coach at Temple University, and had served in the past as defensive coordinator for the University of Florida and Mississippi State University.
