Shimon Prokupecz (born February 4, [1] 1978) is an American journalist who works as the Senior Crime and Justice Correspondent for CNN. [2]
Prokupecz immigrated from Russia as a child [3] and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of Hunter College. [2] After school, he worked as a paralegal in the office of the Brooklyn District Attorney before working as an assignment editor at WABC-TV and then as a producer at WNBC. [2]
In 2013, he joined CNN as their crime and justice producer based in Washington, D.C., and later New York City. [2] In 2017, he returned to Washington, D.C., as a crime and justice reporter. [2] Starting in May 2022, he has been covering the Robb Elementary School shooting in Texas, including the related first responder attack timeline controversy. In June 2022, Prokupecz had an altercation with Uvalde Independent School District Police Chief Pedro Arredondo over his decision to tell police officers to hold off on breaching the classroom where the perpetrator of the shooting killed all his victims. Prokupecz was threatened with charges of trespassing if he and his news crew did not leave the offices of the Uvalde school district where the altercation took place. [4]

Uvalde County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 24,564. Its county seat is Uvalde. The county was created in 1850 and organized in 1856. It is named for Juan de Ugalde, the Spanish governor of Coahuila. Uvalde County was founded by Reading Wood Black, who also founded the city of Uvalde, Texas. The D.C. sniper attacks were a series of coordinated shootings that occurred during three weeks in October 2002 throughout the Washington metropolitan area, consisting of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia, and preliminary shootings, that consisted of murders and robberies in several states, and lasted for six months starting in February 2002. Seven people were killed, and seven others were injured in the preliminary shootings, and ten people were killed and three others were critically wounded in the October shootings. In total, the snipers killed 17 people and wounded 10 others in a 10-month span.

On the evening of December 6, 2018 at approximately 10:15 pm Eastern Standard Time, the Time Warner Center in New York City was evacuated due to a bomb threat by a phone call from an unknown source. The building houses CNN offices and studios for most of its American shows, and the live broadcast of CNN Tonight was interrupted when a fire alarm went off and employees had to exit the building. Host Don Lemon tweeted the happenings as the broadcast suddenly ended and a previously taped Anderson Cooper 360 program aired in its place. Shortly after, Lemon, along with media analyst Brian Stelter and crime and justice reporter Shimon Prokupecz continued a live broadcast from the outside of the building, providing updates to the bomb threats. Police did not find any suspicious devices and the suspect was not identified.
