Shiny and the Spoon is an American folk and Americana band based in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Members include Jordan Neff on vocals, guitar, and harmonica; Amber Nash on vocals, guitar, and ukulele; Pete Brown on upright Bass; and Matt Frazer on Drums. [1]

History

Amber Nash, an Indiana school teacher, performed in jazz bands and musical theater from a young age. [2] She met Jordan Neff, from Ontario, Ohio, at the MidPoint Music Festival in 2008. [3] They soon began performing and writing together, choosing the name "Shiny and the Spoon", and attracted attention through Cincinnati. Nash played ukulele and kazoo, while Neff played guitar, trumpet, and harmonica, and both sang. [3]

In 2009, the band was nominated as "Best Local Band of 2009" by CityBeat, and as "New Artist of the Year" in the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. [2] Their acoustic ukulele cover of "Take On Me" by A-ha earned them wide recognition and became a viral hit. [3] [4] Their debut EP was self-titled and released January 22, 2010. [5] It was played regularly on local radio stations in Ohio and Kentucky. [2] They toured around Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. [6]

Pete Brown and Matt Frazer joined the band in 2011, adding an upright bass and drums to the band's sound. [6] Their first full-length album, Ferris Wheel, was released that year. It earned the number 6 spot on CityBeat's list of the Top 100 Music Releases of 2011, and was nominated for "album of the year" at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. [1] Later Shiny and the Spoon performed at the MidPoint Music Festival for the third time, [7] and went on to release their second album, Sing the Season, in December. They were nominated for "Best Folk/Americana Act" at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards, and their song "Coriander Blues" was nominated as "Americana Song of the Year" at the Independent Music Awards. The group has moved on to record a second full-length album, Box of Bullets. The recording was done at Ultrasuede Studios with the help of Brian Niesz.

The band is currently touring the Cincinnati region as well as surrounding states.

Musical style

Steeped in the Americana tradition folk music, Shiny and the Spoon perform lyrical songs that have been described as whimsical, old-timey, [3] charming and intimate. [5] Musicians in the band sometimes play such diverse instruments as kazoo, ukulele, [3] Spanish coronet, [8] electric guitar, fiddle, piano, [3] along with traditional guitar, drums, and bass. [1] When singing, their harmonies have been called "smooth" and "mesmerizing". [2]

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is an American folk rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2007. The group is led by singer Alex Ebert. The band's name is based on a story Ebert wrote in his youth, about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. Drawing from roots rock, folk, gospel, and psychedelic music, the band's image and sound evoke the hippie movement of the 1960s and 1970s. "House of Gold" is an alternative folk song driven by ukulele that is built on an aching melody and stomping drums. Tyler Joseph wrote and dedicated the song to his mother, Kelly Joseph. "House of Gold" received generally favorable reviews from contemporary music critics. The song was release as a single from the debut album, impacting radio on August 6, 2013. The accompanying music video for "House of Gold" was directed by Warren Kommers and released on October 4, 2013. The video depicts Joseph and Josh Dun being severed in half while still managing to play their instruments. Parker McCollum American musician

Parker McCollum is an American Americana and country singer-songwriter based in Austin, Texas. The owner of PYM Music, he released his first single and EP in 2013, and his full-length debut album The Limestone Kid was released on February 24, 2015. The Austin Chronicle gave the release 3.5/5 stars, writing that "it's too early to declare The Limestone Kid debut of the year, but it's already one to beat," and comparing McCollum's music to that of Charlie Robison. McCollum and his backing band announced a 2015 tour of Texas in support of the album, performing at events such as RedGorilla Music Fest. McCollum released the EP Probably Wrong: Session One on July 7, 2017, and followed it with Probably Wrong: Session Two on September 8, 2017. The full Probably Wrong album was released on November 10, 2017.
