Shiori Usui is a composer of contemporary classical music, improvising musician and music animateur based in Scotland. She is originally from Japan.

Career

Usui's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world including BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Cottbus State Theatre Philharmonic Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, A Far Cry, [1] Collegium Novum Zurich [2] and Artisan Trio, and with conductors such as Ilan Volkov, Martyn Brabbins, Peter Rundel and Franck Ollu.

In 2018, Usui's composition "from scratch" was awarded the Scottish Awards for New Music for large ensemble and she was shortlisted for the Twenty Fifth Anniversary Awards by the Arts Foundation. [3]

In 2017, "from scratch" was performed by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Usui as a vocalist with conductor Ilan Volkov at Tectonics Glasgow festival. [4]

In 2016, Usui won a publishing deal with Ricordi Berlin. [5]

In 2015, Usui's music "Ophiocordyceps unilateralis s.l." was performed at the BBC Proms by BCMG and conductor Franck Ollu. [6]

In 2013 – 2014, Usui was awarded the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group/Sound and Music composer-in-residence, [7] and Scottish Chamber Orchestra Connect Fellow funded by BBC Performing Arts Fund, for working with children with additional support needs. [8]

In 2012, Usui's composition 'Warai' received the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award. In the same year, Usui was awarded a Civitella Ranieri fellowship in conjunction with UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary. [9]

As an improvising musician, Usui has performed with artists and groups such as Arve Henriksen, Ilan Volkov, Rie Nakajima, Lee Patterson, Cato, Grey Area, BCMG and Collegium Novum Zurich. [10]

As a music animateur, Usui has worked as a fellow in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's outreach and education department, worked in various projects with school children and has had a training with Musicians Without Borders Edinburgh.

He gained international renown and repute for his performances of the works of Czech composers such as Antonín Dvořák and Bohuslav Martinů, and was credited as "the most profound proponent of Czech orchestral music" by Czech music specialist Professor Michael Beckerman.

Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands (ISO) is an Icelandic orchestra based in Reykjavík, Iceland. Its primary concert venue is the Harpa Concert Hall. The Iceland Symphony is an autonomous public institution under the auspices of the Icelandic Ministry of Education. Iceland Symphony Orchestra made its home in Háskólabíó from 1961 to 2011, but moved into the new 1800-seat Harpa Concert Hall in spring 2011. The orchestra gives approximately sixty concerts each season. Per a 1982 law, the Iceland Symphony's primary financial sources are the Icelandic treasury (82%) and the City of Reykjavik (18%).

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is a Scottish broadcasting symphony orchestra based in Glasgow. One of five full-time orchestras maintained by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), it is the oldest full-time professional radio orchestra in Scotland. The orchestra is based at City Halls in Glasgow.

p53 was an experimental music group commissioned by English percussionist Chris Cutler to play at the 25th Frankfurt Jazz Festival in Germany in September 1994. Their performance was recorded and released by Recommended Records in 1996 on a live album entitled p53. The group reassembled in May 1997 to play at the Angelica International Festival of contemporary music in Bologna, Italy. In November 2006 an orchestral version with three soloists, Jon Rose, Zeena Parkins and Chris Cutler performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow, Scotland, which was recorded and broadcast by the BBC in March 2007. This version was performed again at the Opera House in Milan in 2014 with the Orchestra de Teatro Communale, with soloists Daan Vandewalle and Thomas Dimuzio.

Helen Grime is a Scottish composer whose work, Virga, was selected as one of the best ten new classical works of the 2000s by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
