The Karolinska Institute is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Karolinska Institute is consistently ranked amongst the world's best medical schools,ranking 6th worldwide for medicine in 2021. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen,who took office in August 2017.
Doctor of Medicine is a medical degree,the meaning of which varies between different jurisdictions. In the United States,and some other countries,the M.D. denotes a professional degree. This generally arose because many in 18th-century medical professions trained in Scotland,which used the M.D. degree nomenclature. In England,however,Bachelor of Medicine,Bachelor of Surgery was used and eventually in the 19th century became the standard in Scotland too. Thus,in the United Kingdom,Ireland and other countries,the M.D. is a research doctorate,honorary doctorate or applied clinical degree restricted to those who already hold a professional degree (Bachelor's/Master's/Doctoral) in medicine. In those countries,the equivalent professional degree to the North American,and some others use of M.D.,is still typically titled Bachelor of Medicine,Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.). A provider who holds a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree has a "doctoral" degree and sometimes can be referred to as a "doctor," but is not the same as a healthcare provider who holds a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree since the M.D. degree confers much more authoritative clinical capacities,greater autonomy,and responsibility.

In North America PAs may diagnose illnesses,develop and manage treatment plans,prescribe medications,and serve as a principal healthcare provider. PAs are required in many states to have a direct agreement with a physician.

Ottersen has been professor of medicine at the University of Oslo since 1992 and served as the university's directly elected Rector from 2009 to 2017.
Ray Fletcher Farquharson was a Canadian medical doctor,university professor,and medical researcher. Born in Claude,Ontario,he attended and taught at the University of Toronto for most of his life,and was trained and employed at Toronto General Hospital. With co-researcher Arthur Squires,Farquharson was responsible for the discovery of the Farquharson phenomenon,an important principle of endocrinology,which is that administering external hormones suppresses the natural production of that hormone.

Rikard Holmdahl is a Swedish physician and immunologist. He was appointed as a full professor and the head of Medical Inflammation Research (MIR) unit at Lund University in 1993. In 2008,Rikard and his whole research group were recruited to Karolinska Institute. His team was the first to discover and positionally clone a single nucleotide polymorphism at the Ncf1 gene causing susceptibility to autoimmune diseases in rat models. Rikard was an adjunct member of the Nobel Committee for physiology or medicine between 2016 and 2021,and was ranked 2nd among the top immunology scientists in Sweden in 2021.
