Pang Wei is a Chinese Olympic sport shooter. He won a gold medal in the 10 metre air pistol at the 2008 Summer Olympics and a bronze medal in the same event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He also won the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships in the same event, at the age of 20.
Nino Salukvadze is a Georgian sport shooter. She is a ten-time Olympian, the record for appearances by a female athlete and tying Canadian showjumper Ian Millar for the most for any athlete. Salukvadze has won medals on three occasions, while competing on three different Olympic teams – for the Soviet Union in 1988, then the Unified Team at Barcelona in 1992 after the collapse of the Soviet Union collapsed, and lastly for Georgia beginning in 1996.

Denmark's Jesper Hansen, after getting to the finals through three shoot-off rounds, won silver, the first Olympic medal in his career. The bronze was awarded to Kuwait's Abdullah Al-Rashidi, who was also the 2016 bronze medalist in skeet. The defending champion Gabriele Rossetti entered the competition but did not qualify for the finals.

Saurabh Chaudhary is an Indian sport shooter. He won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in 10 m Air Pistol. He was the youngest Indian gold medalist at the Asian Games. He had earlier won gold medals and set a new junior world record in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. He is the only Indian shooter to win a gold medal in ISSF World Championship, ISSF World Cup, Youth Olympic Games, Asian Games and Asian Air Gun Championship. He broke his own world record with a score of 245.5 and claimed gold in Junior Men 10m Air Pistol at 2018 World Championship in Changwon, Korea.

The first matches in the group stages of the football and softball events was held on 21 July. The opening ceremony was scheduled two days later on 23 July. The last day of competition and the closing ceremony was on 8 August. However, the Games was referred to by its original date in all scheduled events in order to avoid confusion in future years. With the area under a state of emergency because of the pandemic, the Games were held largely behind closed doors with no spectators permitted.
