The men's 500 metres competition in short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 11 February (heats) and 13 February (finals), at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing. [1] Shaoang Liu of Hungary won the event, his first individual Olympic gold. Konstantin Ivliev, representing the Russian Olympic committee, won silver, his first Olympic medal. Steven Dubois of Canada won the bronze medal.

The defending champion is Wu Dajing. The bronze medalist, Lim Hyo-jun, qualified for the Olympics as well but will be representing China rather than South Korea, which he represented in 2018. Shaoang Liu is the 2021 World Short Track Speed Skating champion at the 500 m distance. Semion Elistratov and Pietro Sighel are the silver and bronze medalists, respectively. Many top athletes did not participate in the championship, however. Shaolin Sándor Liu was leading the 2021–22 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup at the 500 m distance with four races completed before the Olympics, followed by Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei. Wu Dajing is also the world and Olympic record holder.

Qualification

Countries were assigned quotas based on their performance during the 2021–22 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup, with the top 32 athletes (maximum of three per country qualifying quotas. If a NOC declined a quota spot, it was distributed to the next available athlete, only if the maximum quota of 56 athletes per gender was not surpassed. [2]

Shaoang Liu is a Hungarian Olympic gold medalist short track speed skater. He is the younger brother of teammate Shaolin Sándor Liu. Born to a Chinese father and Hungarian mother, he started the sport in 2006 and trained in China for a year. He represented Hungary at the Winter Olympics in 2018 and 2022 in short track. At PyeongChang 2018, he won gold with Team Hungary in the men's relay, then became the most successful winter Olympian in 2022 after winning two bronze medals and one gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2022.

Short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, China. The events are scheduled to take place between 5 and 16 February 2022. A total of nine short track speed skating events will be held.

The men's 500 m competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 12 February, at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. The event was won by three Asians, Gao Tingyu of China, the 2018 bronze medalist, who set a new Olympic record, Cha Min-kyu of South Korea, replicating his 2018 success, and Wataru Morishige of Japan, his first Olympic medal.

Håvard Holmefjord Lorentzen of Norway won bronze.

The men's 1500 m competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held on 8 February, at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands defended his 2018 title and became again the Olympic champion. Thomas Krol, also of the Netherlands, won the silver medal. Kim Min-seok of South Korea won bronze.

She set a new Olympic record and won her sixth Olympic gold medal, thereby becoming the first person to win individual gold medals at five different Olympics. The women's 3000 m competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 5 February, at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. The event was won by Irene Schouten representing the Netherlands for whom it was the first Olympic gold medal. Schouten also set the new Olympic record. Francesca Lollobrigida of Italy was second, and Isabelle Weidemann of Canada third. For both of them, it was the first Olympic medal. In addition, Lollobrigida's medal was the first ever Italian Olympic medal in women's speed skating.

The men's 5000 m competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 6 February, at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. The event was won by Nils van der Poel of Sweden. Patrick Roest of the Netherlands won the silver medal, and Hallgeir Engebråten of Norway the bronze medal. For van der Poel and Engebråten these are the first Olympic medals. Van der Poel's medal was the first Olympic medal in speed skating for Sweden since 1988, when Tomas Gustafson won both 5000 m and 10000 m.

The men's 10,000 m competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 11 February, at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. Nils van der Poel of Sweden won the event, a few days after winning the 5000 m distance, and set a new world record. Patrick Roest of the Netherlands won the silver medal, and Davide Ghiotto of Italy the bronze, his first individual Olympic medal.

The women's 5000 m competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 10 February, at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. Irene Schouten of the Netherlands, who already became the champion on 3000 m a few days earlier, won the event. Isabelle Weidemann of Canada won the silver medal, and Martina Sáblíková of the Czech Republic, the 2010 and 2014 Olympic champion at this distance, bronze.

The men's mass start competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 19 February 2022, at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. Bart Swings of Belgium, the 2018 silver medalist, won the event. This was the first gold medal for Belgium at the Winter Olympics since 1948. Chung Jae-won of South Korea won the silver medal, his first individual Olympic medal, and Lee Seung-hoon, the defending champion, bronze.

The men's team pursuit competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 13 February (semifinals) and 15 February (final), at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. Hallgeir Engebråten, Peder Kongshaug, and Sverre Lunde Pedersen, representing Norway, won the event. Norway defended their 2018 title, but Pedersen was the only athlete returning to the podium. Daniil Aldoshkin, Sergey Trofimov, Ruslan Zakharov, representing the Russian Olympic committee, won the silver medal, the first time a Russian team medaled in the event. Zakharov, formerly a short track speed skater and the 2014 Olympic champion in the team relay, became the second man, after Eric Flaim, who medalled at the Olympics in both speed skating and short track speed skating. Ethan Cepuran, Casey Dawson, Emery Lehman, and Joey Mantia, of the United States, won bronze.
