Shravan Kumar (born 16 March 1996) is an Indian cyber security consultant, student activist. He is best known for his involvement in exposing security loopholes by hacking main servers of VTU examination and payment portal in 2018 [1] and allegedly hacking into Russian servers to upload and expose the sex video of minister Ramesh Jarkiholi in 2021. [2]

Life and Education

Early life

Shravan Kumar was born in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on March 16, 1996. He grew up in his native town and attended Rotary High School in Vijayapura, Devanahalli, He was later enrolled at Brindavan college of Engineering in Electronics and communication. [1]

Student activism

In 2018, Shravan started an online petition in change.org to bring reforms in the year back system. It gathered support from students across the state with 19,000 signatures in the span of few weeks. [3] [4] [5] Shortly VTU students struggle committee was formed and shravan was selected as Co-Convenor. Protests started across the state with the help of student unions ABVP, AIDSO and NSUI. Though VTU resisted and denied to bring any changes in academics. When students repeated protests had gone unheard, Shravan gave a call to boycott classes across the state on 1 September 2018 against its alleged mismanaged examination system. [8] [9]

As many as three lakh engineering students across the state boycotted classes on that day seeking attention from officials of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) for their various demands. [10] Thousands of students flocked under different banners in the city majorly at Mysore Bank Circle and Anand Rao circle for protests organised by All India Democratic Students’ Organization & VTU Students’ Struggle Committee and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, respectively. Shortly after VTU had decided to bring changes in the academics after the statewide protest, Shravan hacked into main servers of VTU examination portal and also payment portal. Bangalore mirror published this on the cover page which created sensation in the university. [12] It was published that Shravan had access to 18,000 lecturers personal details in VTU database as well as 3 lakh students marks registry where he could change the marks of any student. Though correspondent in Bangalore mirror tried to hide the identity of Shravan by using Pseudonym Sai K, the photo of him holding the answer script revealed it was him behind the hack. University officials of VTU had lodged a complaint with the cybercrime police and later charges were dropped. [13]

Involvement in Ramesh Jarkiholi Sex Scandal

Shravan is suspected to have played a major role in the scandal by allegedly hacking into Russian servers to upload the sex video of the minister Ramesh jarkiholi. [14] Shravan also involved in allegedly hacking into the WhatsApp of SIT officials to mislead the ongoing investigation. [2]

After absconding for nearly 3 months, Shravan and Naresh approached sessions Court seeking anticipatory bail from undisclosed location. On hearing plea court granted anticipatory bail to both stating that evidences against them doesn't prove the Prima facie. [15] [16]

Though court had given bail it was mentioned that it is at the liberty of investigation officer to take them to custody, but SIT didn't make any arrest but instead interrogated them. [17]
