All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) is a student organisation in India. It was founded on 28 December 1954. AIDSO demands scientific, secular and democratic education for all. Its motto is struggle, unity, progress. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

The AIDSO aims to fight against injustice, oppression and exploitation and promote social transformation.

The primary objective of the AIDSO is to organise student movements against the anti-education policies of the central and state governments as well as other authorities concerned, and for the "establishment of a scientific, secular, democratic education system".[ citation needed ]

Movements and protests

The AIDSO was formed on 28 December 1954. In the late 50s, a large student movement formed in West Bengal against a seat restriction scheme. The AIDSO played a crucial role In this movement.[ citation needed ] In 1974, AIDSO held the Cuttack Conference where the organisation emerged in a new form with an All India character, with representation from 8 states.

The AIDSO played a role[ clarification needed ] during the Emergency of 1975–76. Several members were involved in protesting against bus and tram fare increases in West Bengal in the 1980s. Manik Burman, a school student and AIDSO worker, and Rabi Ghosh, a leading AIDSO organiser, sustained severe bullet injuries[ citation needed ]. In Purulia Habul Rajak an AIDSO worker, and Sovaram Modak, died after being shot by police[ citation needed ]. AIDSO opposed NPE 86[ clarification needed ] and organised national protests.[ citation needed ]

In Kerala, the AIDSO was part of a protracted movement against the DPEP[ clarification needed ] or SSA[ clarification needed ].[ citation needed ]

Recently the AIDSO has organised a national movement against the government policies of commercialisation of education, bringing education under the purview of GATS, the introduction of sex education at school level and the policy of SEZ (Special Economic Zones).[ citation needed ]

AIDSO supported VTU students movement to abolish year back and critical year back system for students studying in old scheme and also providing supplementary for students of CBCS scheme. Statewide VTU colleges voluntary bundh received exceptionally well response from students and more than 160 engineering colleges were completely shut down. Students had a massive protest near Mysore bank circle, Bangalore.

AIDSO organised country level protest against Semester System & choice based credit system (CBCS). [6]

During the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement, AIDSO organized a protest in Kolkata to support Bangladeshi students. [7] [8]

Abdul Latif Chowdhury, widely known as Saheb Qiblah Fultali, was a late-twentieth century Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, mufassir, qāriʾ, poet and orator. As a prolific author, he completed several works in Arabic, Bengali and Urdu including Muntakhab as-Siyār and Anwar as-Sālikīn. His books are part of syllabic studies under the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board. Fultali was the leading figure of the Islamic Arabic University movement and the demand for fazil and kamil qualifications to be recognised as bachelor's and master's degrees. He is the founder of several influential organisations and institutions in Bangladesh and the United Kingdom such as Anjumane Al Islah, Hazrat Shahjalal Darussunnah Yaqubia Kamil Madrasa and Madrasah-e-Darul Qirat Majidiah.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh</span> Bangladeshi Islamic advocacy group

Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh is an Islamist advocacy group consisted mostly of hard-line religious teachers (Ulama) and students in Bangladesh. The group is mainly based on qawmi madrasas in Bangladesh. In 2013, they submitted a 13-point charter to the government of Bangladesh, which included the demand for the enactment of a blasphemy law. Under recent years, Hefazat has been formed into more of a moderate and anti-terrorist ideology due to success of Awami League in ensuring jobs and mobilising qawmi madrasa.

2021 Nabanna Abhijan was a protest march to the West Bengal state secretariat Nabanna, organised by Students Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Left Front and other Left parties and student organisations on 11 February 2021 against the alleged failures of TMC-led Government of West Bengal, which eventually turned into a conflict between the police and protesters. The protest march saw a massive involvement of youths, students and activists from SFI, DYFI and 8 other Left parties along with Indian National Congress and it's unions. Unemployment was one of major issues of this protest.

Anti-Bengali sentiment comprises negative attitudes and views on Bengalis. This sentiment is present in several parts of India: Gujarat, Bihar, Assam, and various tribal areas. etc. Issues include discrimination in inhabitation, other forms of discrimination, political reasons, government actions, anti-Bangladeshi sentiment, etc. The discriminative condition of Bengalis can be traced from Khoirabari massacre, Nellie massacre, Silapathar massacre, North Kamrup massacre, Goreswar massacre, Bongal Kheda, etc. This has led to emergence of Bengali sub-nationalism in India as a form of protest and formation of many pro-Bengali organisations in India.

The protest against the death of Anish Khan, also known as the justice for Anish Khan protest, began on 18 February 2022 after the death of All India Students' Federation (AISF) leader Anish Khan. The AISF, Students' Federation of India, All India Students Association and other organizations organised protests, including rallies, human chains and demonstrations. The protests began in Jadavpur and Park Circus, initiated by students at Aliah University, then rapidly spread across the state of West Bengal and throughout India.

Mufakkir al-Islām Ḍiyā' ad-Dīn ibn Muqaddas ʿAlī, better known simply as Zia Uddin or reverentially as Nazim Saheb Huzur, is a Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic scholar, politician and educationist. He is currently the president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh and Azad Dini Adarah-e-Talim, and an advisor to Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. Uddin is also the director of Jamia Madania Angura-Muhammadpur and a member of Al-Haiatul Ulya Lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh's permanent committee. He has played important roles in the 2013 Shapla Square protests and Khatme Nabuwwat movement, and has spoken out against the construction of the Tipaimukh Dam.

BIAM Model School and College is an educational institution located in Bogra District, Bangladesh. This school and college operates under Bangladesh Institute of Administration and Management (BIAM) Foundation. It originally founded as Bogra Model School and College, and Tarique Rahman, son of the then prime minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia, laid the foundation stone of the organization. This educational institution is located in Nishindara area of Bogra district. The institute started its educational activities on April 24, 2005 and took part in all public examinations in 2008.

The 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement was a series of anti-government and pro-democracy protests in Bangladesh, spearheaded primarily by university students. Initially focused on restructuring quota-based systems for government job recruitment, the movement expanded against what many perceive as an authoritarian government when they carried out the July massacre of protestors and civilians, most of whom were students. Started as a student movement, the movement later escalated into a fully-fledged mass uprising known as the Student–People's uprising.

Abu Sayed was a Bangladeshi student activist who was shot dead by the Bangladesh Police on 16 July 2024, while participating in the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement. Sayed was a student of Begum Rokeya University and was involved in the protest in front of the university when the police engaged in lathi charges and opened fire on the students.

The July massacre was the violent suppression and mass killings in Bangladesh during the July Revolution from July 16 to August 5, 2024. Triggered by the reinstatement of a controversial quota system and widespread public dissatisfaction, the crackdown was carried out by the government led by the Awami League party, its affiliated groups such as the Chhatra League, and various law enforcement agencies.

Student–People's uprising was a pro-democratic mass uprising against the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh. The movement started as a quota reform movement soon after the High Court Division of the Supreme Court declared the circular issued by the government in 2018 invalid on 5 June 2024. But the government law-enforcing agencies and the ruling party members carried out massive suppression and mass killing of the protesters, known as the July massacre. The movement then turned into a fully-fledged mass uprising, ultimately ousting Sheikh Hasina on 5 August 2024.

Ohidul Islam and Others v. The Government of Bangladesh and Others was a case brought before the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. The writ petition was filed three years after the Government of Bangladesh, amid the 2018 quota reform movement, issued a circular declaring the existing quotas for descendants of 1971 Liberation War veterans to be unconstitutional. Proceedings in this case later became a significant factor in shaping the developments leading to the 2024 quota reform movement.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Student–People's uprising</span> 2024 mass uprising in Bangladesh

The Students–People's uprising, also known as the July Revolution, was a pro-democratic mass uprising in Bangladesh. It began as a quota reform movement in early June 2024, led by the Anti-discrimination Students Movement, after the Bangladesh Supreme Court invalidated the government's 2018 circular regarding job quotas in the public sector. The movement escalated into a full-fledged mass uprising after the government carried out mass killings of protesters, known as July massacre, by the late of July. By early August, the movement evolved into a non-cooperation movement, ultimately leading to the ouster of the then-Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, who fled Bangladesh to India. Hasina's ouster triggered a constitutional crisis, leading to the formation of an interim government led by the country's only Nobel laureate, Muhammad Yunus, as the chief adviser.

On 26 November 2024, during a protest demanding the release of a Bangladeshi Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, who had been arrested on sedition charges, Saiful Islam Alif, a lawyer at the Chittagong Court, was hacked with sharp weapons and killed by some individual in the violence. Reports indicate that the violence involved individuals identified as followers of Das and alleged supporters of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). However, ISKCON Bangladesh has denied any involvement in the incident.
