Probodh Purkait was an Indian politician belonging to the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) (SUCI(C)). He represented the Kultali constituency in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for more than thirty years. [1]
Purkait was kidnapped on the eve of the 1971 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. [2]
In 1996 a court case was opened against Purkait and other SUCI cadres,for the killing of two Indian National Congress supporters during a clash in 1985. On 12 November 1997,the Alipore sessions court,which held the trial,convicted six persons and acquitted 32,including Purkait. Subsequently an appeal was filed by the State Government in the High Court and in 2005 Purkait and 6 others were given life sentence (2005 - current) for murder. [3] SUCI has denounced the process as a false case and called the court ruling a conspiracy of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)). [1] [4] Supreme Court of India on 27 February 2007 dismissed the appeal filed by Prabodh Purkait against the judgment passed by the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court. [5]

Jyoti Basu was an Indian Marxist theorist,communist activist,and politician. He was one of the most prominent leaders of Communist movement in India. He served as the 6th and longest serving Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000. He was one of the founding members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the member of Politburo of the party since its formation in 1964 till 2008. He was also the member of West Bengal Legislative Assembly 11 times. In his political career,spanning over seven decades,he was noted to have been the India's longest serving chief minister in an elected democracy,at the time of his resignation. He declined the post of Prime Minister after the 1996 Indian general election after the CPM refused to let him head a multi-party coalition as would not be able to implement Marxist programs and relinquished the prime ministership to Deve Gowda.

Hare Krishna Konar was an Indian Marxist revolutionary,peasant leader,agricultural theorist,and politician who was one of the founding members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and was the chief architect of India's first and largest agrarian reform in West Bengal. In 1932,Konar was deported to the Cellular Jail of the Andamans for 6 years at the age of 18 for his involvement in the Begut Robbery case of the Jugantar Party;there he took part in the first hunger strike,and in 1935 he founded the Communist Consolidation and led the historical second hunger strike.
