Shrikant Khandalkar was a lawyer known for filing public interest litigation in India. He died Sunday 29 November 2015.

On Sunday 29 November 2015 Khandalkar was found dead. [1] Police determined that the death was a suicide. [1] His body was injured after falling 8 stories from a window. [1] He held a suicide note which explained that he had serious health problems. [1] The lack of proper lighting in the courthouse was named as an explanation for why no one noticed the danger. [1] The Hitavada reported that he was alive for some hours before he was able to go to the hospital, where he died. [2] [3] Khandalkar had been in conflict with various organizations over lawsuits, and this may have contributed to his poor condition. [4] [3] Nagpur Today described the death as mysterious. [5]

In 2019 a group of lawyers requested a probe into the deaths of Khandalkar, Brijgopal Harkishan Loya, and retired judge Prakash Thombre. [6] These three were legal colleagues and all died in strange ways. [7]

Congress politician Kapil Sibal stated his opinion that Khandalkar was murdered. [8] [9]

Khandalkar helped to expose the Maharashtra Irrigation Scam. [10]

In 2011 Khandalkar represented university faculty who called for review of the appointment of university chancellors. [11]

In 2013 Khandalkar praised the Government of Maharashtra for committing to establish the Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur. [12] Previously Khandalkar had filed public interest litigation advocating for this. [12] Also in 2013 in Nagpur, Khandalkar filed for investigation about the sale of public land to a private real estate development company. [13]

The Maharashtra Irrigation Scam was an alleged government scam which involved financial irregularities of 35,000 crore (US$4.4 billion) in the Indian state of Maharashtra during 1999–2009. The allegations of corruption were made after a 2012 Economic Survey stated that the state's irrigation potential had increased by only 0.1% during the past decade, even after 70,000 crore (US$8.8 billion) had been spent on the various projects. Vijay Pandhare, an engineer employed by the government claimed that more than half the amount had been pocketed by corrupt leaders. The Maharashtra Government rejected the allegations, stating that the 0.1% increase considered only "well irrigation" and did not take into account other projects. It released a whitepaper, stating that there was a 28% rise in the irrigation potential, giving a clean chit to its ministers.

Anjali Anish Damania is an Indian anti-corruption activist and politician. She was the convener of Maharashtra state unit of Aam Admi Party (AAP). During 2011–12, she exposed corruption in the Kondhane dam project through RTI queries. She came into the limelight in 2012, after she accused the Bharatiya Janata Party President Nitin Gadkari of having a business partnership with the Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar. She unsuccessfully contested 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Nagpur, as an AAP candidate against Gadkari. However, in March 2015, she quit the AAP amid allegations of horse trading against national convener and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. She has filed several PIL's against powerful politicians like Chhagan Bhujbal and Eknath Khadse. On 2 June 2016 she went on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of Eknath Khadse, which resulted in Khadse's resignation from the position of Maharashtra state Revenue Minister.

The Vyapam scam was an entrance examination, admission and recruitment scam. It was functional since the 1990s and was finally unearthed in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in 2013.

Himanshu Roy was an Indian police officer, who served as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of Maharashtra and Joint Commissioner of Police in Mumbai. He was Chief of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). He was an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Maharashtra Cadre of 1988 batch and alumnus of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. He was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and 50th Anniversary Independence medal.

Brijgopal Harkishan Loya (1966–2014) was an Indian judge who served in a special court which deals with matters relating to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He was presiding over the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case, and died on 1 December 2014 in Nagpur. A bench of the Supreme Court of India, headed by the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, on April 19, 2018, dismissed the public interest petition (PIL), and stated the death to be natural and such petitions to be an attack on the Judiciary.

The Ram Jhula consists of two parallel cable-stayed railway over-bridges in Nagpur, India. The 606.74 metres (1,990.6 ft) long bridge crosses the railway tracks north of Nagpur Junction railway station. The Blue Line of the Nagpur Metro will run along the centre of the bridge on the eastern side.

Swapna Sanjiv Joshi is a sitting judge in the Bombay High Court in Maharashtra, India. Joshi attracted public attention after a fellow judge, Brijgopal Harkishan Loya, died under mysterious circumstances after attending her daughter's wedding in Nagpur. Joshi subsequently recused herself from hearing a case concerning allegations of poisoning in relation to Loya's death.
