Shupenzë is a village and a former municipality in the Dibër County, eastern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Bulqizë. [1] The population at the 2011 census was 5,503. [2]

Dibër County is one of the 12 counties of the Republic of Albania, spanning a surface area of 2,586 square kilometres (998 sq mi) with the capital in Peshkopi. The county borders on the counties of Durrës, Elbasan, Kukës, Lezhë, Tirana and the country of North Macedonia. It is divided into four municipalities, including Bulqizë, Dibër, Klos and Mat.. The municipalities are further subdivided into 290 towns and villages in total.

Bulqizë Municipality in Dibër, Albania

Bulqizë is the name of both a town and a municipality in Dibër County, eastern Albania. It was formed during the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipality of Bulqizë with the adjacent municipalities of Fushë-Bulqizë, Gjoricë, Martanesh, Ostren, Shupenzë, Trebisht and Zerqan. The seat of the municipality is the town also called Bulqizë. The total population is 31,210, in a total area of 678.51 km2. The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 8,177.

Historical demographics

In 1900, Vasil Kanchov gathered and compiled statistics on demographics in the area and reported the populations of ten villages in the modern municipality, including Bllacë, Boçevë, Homesh (Bulgarian : ОмежеOmezhe), Kovashicë, Mazhicë, Okshatinë, Shtushaj, Topojan, Vlashaj and Zogjaj. All ten were reported as being Albanian-inhabited, with a total population amongst them of 4080. [3]
