Siddakatte Chennappa Shetty (born 8 May 1952 at Rayee village; died 22 March 2014 in Manipal, Mangalore) was a Yakshagana artist from Siddakatte, Bantwal Mangalore, Karnataka. Siddakatte was well known for his oratory skills in Yakshagana and Tala-Maddale (form of Yakshagana).
Chennappa Shetty was the second son of Vasu Shetty and Lingamma. He resided in Mavinakatte Bantwal with his wife Hemalatha and 3 sons Bharath, Bhuvan and Bhushan.
Siddakatte made his Yakshagana debut in 1965 after being trained at Yakshagana Kendra Dharmashala under the guidance of Kuriya Vittal Shastri and Padre Chandu. Thereafter, he moved to Dharmastala, Kadri, Bappanadu, Kumble and Madhur Mela. Focusing primarily on his oratory skills, took guidance from Kuthlodi Vasu Shetty, Dr.Prabhakar Joshi, Korgi Venkateshwara Upadhyaya and Dr.Shimanthoor Narayana Shetty. He admired and emulated Agari Shirinivas Bhagawatha's personality and lifestyle.
Badaguthittu (northern form) invited based on his popularity in south and oratory skills. He made his entry through Perdoor Mela and after to Saligrama. He learnt badagutittu naatya from Heranjalu Venkataramana. Siddakatte was one of the most successful artists who moved from thenkuthittu to badaguthittu. He came back to theenkuthittu through Yedaneer mela after working several years in badaguthittu.
Siddakatte had extraordinary knowledge on Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bhagavatha and few other Indian literatures. Known for his great voice, clean pronunciation and enunciation, tactical derivation of stories and sub-stories from Puranas in conversation, and utilization of proverbs and Sanskrit Shloka at appropriate situations in a timely manner.
Siddakatte was solicited by different firms in India and in gulf countries. He was awarded Karnataka Rajyothsava district award in 2009. [1] He was identified as "Mathina Malla" in Yakshagana and Tala-Maddale world.
Siddakatte died of a brain stroke on 22 March 2014 at Kasturba hospital Manipal, Mangalore. [2]
Yakshagana is a traditional theatre, developed in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shimoga and western parts of Chikmagalur districts, in the state of Karnataka and in Kasaragod district in Kerala that combines dance, music, dialogue, costume, make-up, and stage techniques with a unique style and form. It is believed to have evolved from pre-classical music and theatre during the period of the Bhakti movement. It is sometimes simply called "Aata" or āṭa. This theatre style is mainly found in coastal regions of Karnataka in various forms. Towards the south from Dakshina Kannada to Kasaragod of Tulu Nadu region, the form of Yakshagana is called Thenku thittu and towards the north from Udupi up to Uttara Kannada it is called Badaga thittu. Both of these forms are equally played all over the region. Yakshagana is traditionally presented from dusk to dawn. Its stories are drawn from Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavata and other epics from both Hindu and Jain and other ancient Indic traditions.
D. Veerendra Heggade is an Indian philanthropist and the hereditary administrator of the Dharmasthala Temple. He succeeded to the post at the age of 19, on October 24, 1968, the 21st in his line. Bantwal Vaikunta Baliga (1895–1968) was a Konkani lawyer who played an active role in Indian governance and politics. He was actively involved in India’s struggle for freedom and worked several times with Mahatma Gandhi. He was elected as MLA and subsequently became the Law Minister and Speaker of the Mysore State Assembly. His term as Speaker spanned from March 1962 to June 1968. He is remembered for his parliamentary acumen, knowledge of legislative business, and understanding of parliamentary procedure. As the Speaker he was known to be very strict in conducting the House proceedings.
Kalinga Navada (1957–1990) was a well-known Yakshagana Bhagavatha of the 20th century. He was noted for his melodious voice and tone and new innovations made in rendering yakshagana songs which earned him various titles like "Kanchina Kanta", "Karavali Kogile", "Rasaraga Chakravarthy", "Yuga Pravartaka".
Tala-Maddale is an ancient form of performance dialogue or debate performance in Southern India in the Karavali and Malnad regions of Karnataka and Kerala. The plot and content of the conversation is drawn from popular mythology but the performance mainly consists of an impromptu debate between characters involving sarcasm, puns, philosophy positions and humour. The main plot is sung from the same oral texts used for the Yakshgana form of dance- drama. Performers claim that this was a more intellectual rendition of the dance during the monsoon season.
B. Janardhana Poojary is a senior politician from Indian National Congress party. He was a former Union Minister and Karnataka's Congress President. During the Prime Ministership of Smt. Indira Gandhi he had been appointed Union Minister of State for Finance in 1982 and he continued to be Union Minister of State for Finance during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi until 1987. Later Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as Union Minister of State for Rural Development from 1987 to 1989. Shree Rajiv Gandhi also appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as General Secretary of All India Congress Committee in 1990 as well as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in 1990. He continued to be General Secretary of All India Congress Committee during the tenure of Prime Minister Shree P. V. Narasimha Rao up to 1996. After Shree Rajiv Gandhi his wife All India Congress Committee President & United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi also appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in 2003 for the second time. He continued as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee up to 2005.
Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali, Keremane (R)(Kannada: ಇಡಗುಂಜಿ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಮಂಡಳಿ)or simply the Keremane Yakshagana Troupe is a Yakshagana troupe based in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. It was started by Keremane Shivarama Hegde in 1934. He is an exponent of this art form and is the first Yakshagana artist to win the Rashtrapati Award, an award handed out by the President of India to people who excel in various fields. The troupe has survived three generations, with his children Shambu Hegde, Mahabala Hegde and Gajanana Hegde and his grand son Shivananda Hegde also being exponents of Yakshagana. Keremane Shivananda Hegde is the current director of the troupe and the institution.
Yakshagana Tala, is a rhythmical pattern in Yakshagana that is determined by a composition called Yakshagana Padya. Tala also decides how a composition is enacted by dancers. It is similar to Tala in other forms of Indian music, but is structurally different from them. Each composition is set to one or more talas, and as a composition is rendered by Himmela, the percussion artist(s) play supporting the dance performance. Tala is maintained by the singer using a pair of finger bells.

Kumble Sundara Rao or Kumble Sunder Rao was an Indian politician and Yakshagana and Tala-Maddale artist. He was exponent of Thenkuthittu or Thenkatittu style of Yakshagana. He was a native of the Dakshina Kannada district in India. He was the member of Tenth Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Surathkal constituency from 1994 to 1999. He won as Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. He worked as an artist in Surathkal, Dharmasthala and Ira Yakshagana melas. He was awarded Yakshamangala award from P Dayananda Pai and P Satish Pai Yakshagana Adhyayana Kendra at Mangalore University for the year 2018–2019. He also served as president of Karnataka state Yakshagana academy.
