Davis in 1871 and patented by Davis and Levi Strauss on May 20, 1873. Prior to the patent, the term "blue jeans" had been long in use for various garments, constructed from blue-colored denim.

The process became popular in the 1980s, as acid jeans gained popularity; however, stone washing has roots going back to 1960s surfer apparel. Stone washing also helps to increase the softness and flexibility of otherwise stiff and rigid fabrics such as canvas and denim. Although stone washing increases a fabric's flexibility, it shortens the life-span of the jeans. The process of stone washing can be costly, as freshly stone washed jeans must be washed many times in order to remove the grit from the process. Along with high production costs, stone washing can be detrimental to the environment, due to the excess grit that is removed as fabric is being stone washed. This leads many manufacturers to pursue other methods to achieve a distressed appearance.

In German- speaking Europe Gebrüder Stitch are known for innovative marketing and communication strategies. With campaigns such as "Christmas on the arse" the Gebrüder Stitch reached a high brand awareness. Quickly they took a leading role in fair jeans production and still use organic denim only.
AG Adriano Goldschmied or AG Jeans is an American clothing company with a focus on denim apparel created with sustainable manufacturing methods. Founded in 2000 in Los Angeles, California, the company is owned by its co-founder Yul Ku, whose Koos Manufacturing previously produced jeans for several well-known brands. AG Jeans was also co-founded by Italian designer Adriano Goldschmied who left the company in 2004 and sold his share of the business, as well as his namesake brand, to Ku. The company has 17 retail stores across the United States including a location on Madison Avenue in New York opened in late 2020. Since 2010, AG Jeans has implemented a number of sustainability measures at its facilities including a water-filtration system that allows it to operate almost entirely on recycled water.
