Silvia Paredes (born 23 January 1983) is an Ecuadorian long distance runner who specialises in the marathon. She competed in the women's marathon event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. [1]

Rodolfo Gómez Orozco is a Mexican retired long-distance runner, who was one of the leading runners represented from Mexico in the 1970s and 1980s. He won the Tokyo Marathon (1981), the IAAF Citizen Golden Marathon in Athens (1982), the Rotterdam Marathon (1982), the Nike OTC Marathon (1982), the Pittsburgh Marathon (1987) and the Mexico City Marathon (1987). He gained prominence on American television in 1982 when he finished in second place, four seconds back in 2:09:33 while being the primary foil to Alberto Salazar's third victory in a row at the New York Marathon. He ran a personal best of 2:09:12 at the 1983 Tokyo Marathon, finishing third in that race.

Benjamín Vencar Paredes Martínez is a Mexican former long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon, but who also competed in duathlons, even winning a silver medal for Mexico at the ITU-world championships in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in June 1992.

The men's marathon event at the 2000 Summer Olympics took place on 1 October 2000 in Sydney, Australia. One hundred athletes from 65 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Gezahegne Abera of Ethiopia, the nation's first victory in the event since winning three in a row from 1960 to 1968. Ethiopia's fourth gold medal in the men's marathon moved it out of a tie with France and the United States into sole possession of the most men's marathon gold medals. Ethiopia also became the first nation to have two medalists in the men's marathon in the same Games since South Africa did it in 1912, as Tesfaye Tola took bronze. Kenya won its third men's marathon medal in four Games with Erick Wainaina's silver. This made Wainaina the sixth man to earn two medals in the event, after his bronze in 1996.

The South American University Athletics Championships was an international athletics competition for student athletes from South American countries. It was staged on one occasion in May 2005 at the Estadio Modelo Alberto Spencer Herrera in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Four nations competed: Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. A total of 42 athletics events were contested, 22 by men and 20 by women. Women did not compete in the pole vault, 3000 metres steeplechase or half marathon, while the men did not compete in a combined track and field event. The host nation topped the medal table, winning 22 events and a total of 55 medals. Peru were runners-up with eleven gold medals, while Chile and Colombia finished with six and three gold medals, respectively.
