Simon de Souza

Simon de Souza (born c.1964) is a French horn teacher in the United Kingdom. He has been a tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire since 2004; [1] and Wells Cathedral School since the 1990s. [2] He also taught at the Purcell School and the junior departments of the Trinity College of Music and Royal Academy of Music. [1] [3]

Biography and playing career

De Souza was brought up in Henley-on-Thames. He studied under British horn teacher Ifor James, followed by postgraduate studies at Trinity College of Music in London. His performing career has seen him work with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Bolshoi Ballet and particularly the quintet Chaconne Brass, with whom he has made four recordings [4] and been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. [5]

Teaching

De Souza is renowned as a teacher. His past pupils include two under-18 winners of the Shell/LSO prize and a winner of the British final of the Paxman International Horn Competition; several former students hold principal positions in major British orchestras. [1] [6] [7]

He has worked with many youth orchestras, including the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales, National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain, [8] National Children's Wind Orchestra, National Schools Symphony Orchestra and National Children's Orchestra of Great Britain. He has written on horn teaching matters for publications including Music Teacher and the Hornplayer magazine, journal of the British Horn Society, of which he was vice-chair and educational consultant. The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO-GB) is the national youth orchestra of the United Kingdom, consisting of 164 members of ages 13 to 19 years. Their mission is to "give thrilling experiences of orchestral music to teenage musicians and audiences who need them most." Auditions take place in the autumn each year at various locations in the country. The minimum standard needed to audition is ABRSM / Trinity Guildhall / London College of Music Grade 8 Distinction, though it is not necessary to have taken any examinations. In 2011, the orchestra was shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society's Best Ensemble Award. In 2012, the NYO received the Queen's Medal for Music. In 2015 the NYO received the Royal Philharmonic Society's Ensemble award, which recognized particularly the launch of NYO Inspire as well as their other work.

Professor Ifor James was a horn player and teacher, numbering among his pupils many future Principal Horns and horn professors at British music schools.

The National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra (NSGSO) was formed in 1976 by George Odam and Sue Stevens as a joint youth orchestra of The Scout Association and Girlguiding in the United Kingdom.
