According to John McCrea, the song is a project he had worked on since he was 16, but put away for a long time. He wrote new music for the song as "the theme seems really relevant". [2]
The song is the band's first new original song in seven years. [3]
Cake announced on July 31, 2018 that big news would be announced to their fan mail subscribers, in early August. The song was then exclusively released on Cake's SoundCloud on August 3, 2018. [4] It was later deleted from Cake's SoundCloud channel in late September. On October 25, 2018, Cake then announced that "Sinking Ship" was out for download on all digital platforms on their Facebook. [5] All of the proceeds from the song are donated to the organization Doctors without Borders. [3]

Twenty One Pilots is an American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio. The band was formed in 2009 by lead vocalist Tyler Joseph along with Nick Thomas and Chris Salih, both of whom left in 2011. Since their departure, the line-up has consisted of Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. The duo is best known for the singles "Stressed Out", "Ride", and "Heathens". The group received a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards for "Stressed Out". The band independently released two albums, Twenty One Pilots (2009) and Regional at Best (2011), before being signed by record label Fueled by Ramen in 2012. Dream Theater is the self-titled twelfth studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released worldwide in September 2013 through Roadrunner Records.
