Sir John Moore Barracks is a military installation near Winchester. It is set to close in 2026.

History

The site used to be known as RAF Flowerdown until 1986 when it was renamed Sir John Moore Barracks, after Lieutenant General Sir John Moore, and became the new depot for the Light Division when they moved from Peninsula Barracks, Winchester. [1] [2]

The barracks went on to become the home of the Army Training Regiment, Winchester. ATR Winchester delivers the 14-week training course to non-infantry adult (age 17+) recruits. [3]

In November 2016 the Ministry of Defence announced that the site would close in 2021. [5] This was later extended to 2024, [6] and once more to 2026. [7]

The 1st Green Jackets was an infantry regiment of the British Army that existed from 1958 to 1966. The regiment served in the Cyprus Emergency, Brunei Revolt, Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation and West Berlin. The regiment formed part of the Green Jackets Brigade and in 1963 was redesignated as a rifle regiment.

The Rifles is an infantry regiment of the British Army. Formed in 2007, it consists of four Regular battalions and three Reserve battalions. Each Regular battalion of The Rifles was formerly an individual battalion of one of the two large regiments of the Light Division. Since formation, the regiment has been involved in combat operations in the later stages of the Iraq War and in the War in Afghanistan.

The Initial Training Group of the British Army is responsible for the content and delivery of non-infantry Phase 1 training. The group's headquarters are at Pirbright, Surrey, commanding 4 Army Training Regiments, 5 Army Training Units, the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, the Army School of Physical Training, and the ARITC Staff Leadership School.
