The 2021–22 Segunda División RFEF season was the first for the Segunda División RFEF, the new fourth highest level in the Spanish football league system. It supplanted Tercera División, which downgraded to the fifth tier as Tercera División RFEF and succeeded the old Segunda División B, which was replaced by Primera División RFEF as the third level of the pyramid. Ninety teams will participate, divided into five groups of eighteen clubs each based on geographical proximity. In each group, the champions automatically promoted to Primera División RFEF, and the second to fifth placers will play promotion play-offs. The last five teams in each group will be relegated to the Tercera División RFEF; in addition, the four worst teams classified 13th in their group will play play-offs to define the last two relegation places.
The 2022 Segunda División RFEF play-offs were the final play-offs for promotion from 2021–22 Segunda División RFEF to the 2022–23 Primera División RFEF.
The 2022–23 Copa del Rey was the 121st staging of the Copa del Rey, the oldest official football competition in Spain. The winners of the competition would have automatically qualified for the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League group stage; however, as Real Madrid had already qualified for European competition via league standings, their place was passed down to the sixth-placed team in La Liga and the UEFA Europa Conference League spot reserved for the sixth-placed team was awarded to the team who finished seventh in the league. Both the winners and runners-up qualified for the four-team 2024 Supercopa de España.
The 2022–23 Primera Federación season was the second season for the Primera Federación, the third highest level in the Spanish football league system. Forty teams participated, divided into two groups of twenty clubs each based on geographical proximity. In each group, the champions were automatically promoted to Segunda División, while the second to fifth placers played the promotion play-offs and the bottom five were relegated to the Segunda Federación.
