Skills and Volunteering Cymru

Skills and Volunteering Cymru (SVC), formerly Student Volunteering Cardiff, is an independent charity registered in the UK [1] and based in the Cardiff area. SVC offers volunteering opportunities to both students and community members in and around the city of Cardiff working with the elderly, young, disadvantaged, and vulnerable. The mission of SVC is to enhance the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the local community. [2]

The charity is based on Museum Place in central Cardiff. There are a team of six staff [3] and a Board of Trustees [4] made up of students who study in the city of Cardiff and community members.

History

Student volunteering in Cardiff can be traced back to 1969 when students at Cardiff University became volunteers at Ely Hospital, a hospital for people who had learning disabilities. In 1971, a branch of Student Community Action (SCA) was formed by students of Cardiff University. [5] [6] Students provided support that enabled the people to develop both social and practical skills and gain confidence, and in 1974 went on to start Cardiff University Social Services (CUSS), now Innovate Trust, who set up the first Supported House for people with learning disabilities in the country. [7] [8] CUSS continued to work closely with SCA, who focused its areas of work on disadvantaged adults and children living in Cardiff. In 2001, the opportunity arose for the formation of a partnership between Innovate Trust and SCA. Supported by the University Union and Innovate Trust, and funded by several organisations, the formation of Student Volunteering Cardiff (SVC) allowed the vision of the original students of both organisations to be carried forward to benefit further generations of Cardiff people.

In 2015 SVC moved premises from the Cardiff University Students’ Union, where they were previously based, to 5-7 Museum Place. [9] At this time, SVC also opened up their volunteering opportunities to members of the Cardiff community, as well as students from other universities across Cardiff, in addition to Cardiff University. In 2018 SVC also expanded its volunteering projects to benefit those living in the surrounding areas.

Sharon Callister has been CEO since March 2022.

The Urdd turned 100 on 25 January 2022 and celebrated by breaking 2 Guinness World Records.

Shaw Trust is a charitable organisation in the United Kingdom which supports people with complex needs into good work. It was founded in the village of Shaw in Wiltshire in 1982.

UK Youth is a national youth work charity founded in 1911 that delivers national programmes to provide opportunities to young people. The charity is an umbrella body with 40 local youth associations from across England. UK Youth's national programmes are delivered locally in partnership with its members, and many are supported by corporate partners.

Scouting in Wales provides an overview of Scouting activities in Wales. Scout troops have existed in the country since 1908 with the largest number of Scouts and volunteer leaders today linked to the Scout Association of the United Kingdom. This is done through ScoutsCymru, the Welsh Scout Council who split the region further into four regions and a total of 12 Scout Areas. In addition to the Scout Association, there are also traditional Scouting groups belonging to the Baden-Powell Scouts' Association and a number of Scouting clubs within Universities which are affiliated to the Student Scout and Guide Organisation.

Cambridge SCA is a registered charity which encourages and provides community volunteering opportunities for the students of the University of Cambridge. Projects typically provide services to disadvantaged groups within the local community and provide students with valuable learning opportunities and a chance to make a difference. Cambridge SCA runs 10 of its own 'Internal Projects', each of which are headed by student Project Leaders - these projects include 'Big Siblings', 'Parklife', 'Betty Stubbens Musical Entertainment Group' and 'Teaching English as a Second Language'. They also offer volunteering opportunities with over 60 external organisations, such as Cambridge Carbon Footprint, Headway and the Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre.

Innovate Trust is an independent charity registered in the UK. based in Cardiff operating across South East Wales. Innovate Trust provides supported living services to adults with learning disabilities, mental health conditions, physical disabilities or sensory impairments in Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda Cynon Taff.

The Queen's Birthday Honours for 2020 are appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries. The Birthday Honours are awarded as part of the Queen's Official Birthday celebrations during the month of June. The honours for New Zealand were announced on 1 June, and for Australia on 8 June.

The 2021 New Year Honours are appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by citizens of those countries. The New Year Honours are awarded as part of the New Year celebrations at the start of January and those for 2021 were announced on 30 December 2020.
