Slay is a 2024 Canadian horror comedy film written and directed by Jem Garrard. The film features RuPaul's Drag Race stars Trinity the Tuck, Heidi N Closet, Crystal Methyd and Cara Melle from RuPaul's Drag Race UK . The film is about a four drag queens fighting vampires to save their lives. [1]

Plot

Mama Sue Flay (Trinity the Tuck) is the head of a small drag family composed of Robin Banks (Heidi N Closet),Olive Wood (Cara Melle), and Bella Da Boys (Crystal Methyd). They travel the country in a pink RV, putting on their show anywhere that will have them. When Robin accidentally books the group into a seedy dive bar in the middle of nowhere the quartet are reluctant to perform at first, but decide to give it a go anyway to an unsurprisingly mixed reception.

In the middle of their second number, one of the locals comes stumbling into the bar and takes a bite out of a patron’s neck before being tossed out. While outside he bites a few more victims and they quickly turn into vampires, so the group barricades themselves inside. Now trapped, they all must put aside their differences and work together if they have any hope of surviving the night.

Reception

Movie Meister Review gave the film a positive review and wrote: Tubi could honestly take notes and make a whole bunch more like this, silly camp films that go well at a weekend watch party with some friends. It’s not here to change lives or be considered high art, Slay is here to entertain and goddamn it does it get that job done. [4]

Jim Morazzini of Voice from the Balcony also gave the film a positive feedback and he said: I will say that although the leads are great performers, they’re not professional actors, and while they do a good job given that, there are the occasional rough spots along the way. But that’s really the only complaint I have. Overall, Slay is a highly enjoyable slice of camp that will probably end up with a cult following. [5]

Karina Adelgaard of Heavens of Horror gave the film a rating of 4 out of 5 and she said

The way the budget is used for the many special effects is brilliant. We’re talking a lot of practical effects and having things happen off-screen. Also, whenever something seems a bit strange, you can be sure that one of the characters will comment on it. [6]

Heidi N Closet and Jackie Cox in the bottom two and face off in a lip-sync, but neither is eliminated from the competition.
