Smriti Mundhra is an American filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Her production company, Meralta Films, specializes in documentary films and non-fiction content.

Mundhra won the Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival for her first feature documentary film A Suitable Girl , along with her co-director Sarita Khurana. [1] [2] Mundhra is also the Executive Producer and Creator of Netflix's original reality TV series, Indian Matchmaking .

In 2020, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject for her film St. Louis Superman (2019).

Biography

Early life and education

Mundhra was born in Los Angeles, California and raised between Los Angeles and Mumbai, India. Her father, Jag Mundhra was also a filmmaker. Before she was born, her parents rented a single screen in Culver City, Los Angeles and became the first exhibitors of Bollywood films in the United States. [3]

Mundhra obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English from California State University, Northridge and Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in film at the Columbia University School of the Arts in 2010. [4] Then, Mundhra moved to Mumbai to begin production on her documentary directorial debut film, A Suitable Girl.

Career

Mundhra started working in film in her teenage years. [5] She was a production secretary on the Coen Brothers' The Man Who Wasn't There and O Brother, Where Art Thou? as well as Spike Jonze's Being John Malkovich. She also served as the production assistant on Neil LaBute's Nurse Betty. [6]

Then, she went on to produce Bomb the System starring Mark Webber [7] that was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for the Best First Feature award. [8] In 2005, she produced Waterborne about three sets of residents who band together after a terrorist attack against LA's water supply. Waterborne received the Special Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival that year. [9] After Waterborne, Mundhra produced Tanuj Chopra's Punching At the Sun . Punching At the Sun premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, was an official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. Immediately after graduating from Columbia University, Mundhra, along with fellow Columbia alumna Sarita Khurana, moved to Mumbai to begin filming A Suitable Girl. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017. [11] [12] [13]

In 2018, she directed an ad campaign for Bumble's launch in India starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas called "Equal Not Loose". [14] Mundhra was named DOC NYC's 40 Under 40 Filmmakers. [15]

Mundhra directed and produced St. Louis Superman , a short documentary, with Sami Khan. The film, produced by Mundhra, Khan and Poh Si Teng, follows former Ferguson activist, battle rapper and state representative Bruce Franks Jr. as he tries to pass a critical bill for his community. [16] It was commissioned by Al Jazeera English [17] and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 where it was awarded the Special Jury Mention. [18] It became the first short documentary acquired by MTV's new documentary banner, MTV Documentary Films, helmed by Sheila Nevins. [19]

In 2020, St. Louis Superman was nominated for the 92nd Academy Award in the category of Best Documentary Short Film. [20]

Mundhra is also the Executive Producer and Creator of Netflix's original reality TV series, Indian Matchmaking . [21] [22] [23] [24]

Personal life

Mundhra is married to Emmy-nominated screenwriter, Christian Magalhaes and they live in Los Angeles, California with their two children. [25] [26]

Sanjay Rawal is an Indian-American documentary film director who lives in New York City. Food Chains was produced by Smriti Keshari, Eva Longoria, Eric Schlosser, and Rawal himself. Forest Whitaker narrates. Khurana was the first Desi woman to win the Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award at Tribeca Film Festival with her collaborator, Smriti Mundhra.

Indian Matchmaking is a 2020 Indian reality television series produced by Smriti Mundhra that premiered on Netflix on 16 July 2020. In August 2021, Netflix renewed the series for a second season. In March 2022, Netflix renewed the series for a third season, which premiered in April 2023.

A Suitable Girl is a 2017 documentary film directed by Sarita Khurana and Smriti Mundhra. The film was screened at SAWCC on 7 April 2017 before premiering on 22 April at the Tribeca Film Festival, winning the Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award. Khurana and Mundra were the first Desi women to earn the New Documentary Director Award. The film has also been screened at the British Film Institute Festival, Mumbai Film Festival, AFI Docs, Amazon and Netflix. In 2018, Library Journal reviewed and recommended the film be included in library collections.

Sami Khan is a Canadian filmmaker. He is most noted as co-director with Smriti Mundhra of the film St. Louis Superman, which was an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020.

<i>Mr. Soul!</i> 2018 film by Melissa Haizlip

Mr. Soul! is a 2018 American documentary film produced, written and directed by documentary filmmaker Melissa Haizlip. The film was co-produced by Doug Blush and co-directed by Sam Pollard. The film tells the story of Ellis Haizlip, the producer and host of SOUL!, the music-and-talk program that aired on public television from 1968 to 1973 and aimed at a Black audience. It was released in 2018 and has since received 21 filmmaking awards. Attorney Chaz Ebert, record executive Ron Gillyard, producer and director Stan Lathan, producer Rishi Rajani, producer Stephanie T.
