Last updated

The Socialist Group is one of the parliamentary groups in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (known as the North Atlantic Assembly until 1999). It consists of members of social democratic and democratic socialist parties from NATO member states, who are members of their countries' national parliaments, for example of members of the British Labour Party and the Social Democratic Party of Germany. It is one of the two main political groups in the assembly, along with the Group of Conservatives, Christian Democrats and Associates. [1]

A parliamentary group, parliamentary party, or parliamentary caucus is a group consisting of members of the same political party or electoral fusion of parties in a legislative assembly such as a parliament or a city council.

Founded in 1955, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly serves as the consultative interparliamentary organisation for the North Atlantic Alliance. Social democracy is a political, social and economic ideology that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a liberal democratic polity and a capitalist economy. The protocols and norms used to accomplish this involve a commitment to representative and participatory democracy; measures for income redistribution and regulation of the economy in the general interest; and welfare state provisions. Social democracy thus aims to create the conditions for capitalism to lead to greater democratic, egalitarian and solidaristic outcomes. Due to longstanding governance by social democratic parties and their influence on socioeconomic policy development in the Nordic countries, in policy circles social democracy has become associated with the Nordic model in the latter part of the 20th century.
