Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg, better known by his pen name Novalis, was an 18th-century German aristocrat, poet, author, mystic and philosopher of Early German Romanticism.
Franz Xaver Süssmayr was an Austrian composer and conductor. Popular in his day, he is now known primarily as the composer who completed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's unfinished Requiem. In addition, there have been performances of Süssmayr's operas at Kremsmünster, and his secular political cantata (1796), Der Retter in Gefahr, SmWV 302, received its first full performance in over 200 years in June 2012 in a new edition by Mark Nabholz, conducted by Terrence Stoneberg. There are also CD recordings of his unfinished clarinet concerto, one of his German requiems, and his Missa Solemnis in D.

Lukács quotes Novalis at the top of the essay, "Philosophy is really homesickness—the desire to be everywhere at home." The essay unfolds closely related to this notion of Novalis—that modern philosophy "mourns the absence of a pre-subjective, pre-reflexive anchoring of reason" and is searching to be grounded but cannot achieve this aim due to philosophy's modern discursive nature.

Eduard Rohde was a German composer and organist. Born in Halle, Germany in 1828, he was a pupil of August Gottfried Ritter, and later a choirmaster at the St. Georgenkirche and singing teacher at the Sophien-Gymnasium in Berlin. Rohde was also a royal music director. Eduard Rohde had a son named Eduard Rohde Jr., also a composer, and died in Berlin in 1883. He wrote piano pieces, motets, part-songs, a sonata, instrumental and vocal works, as well as an elementary textbook for piano. His pupils include Arthur H. Bird.
