Sonia Solicari is a British curator and museum director at Museum of the Home. Solicari has been the Director of the Museum of the Home, in Hoxton, London, since January 2017. [2] [3] [4] [5] Solicari is also co-director of the Centre for Studies of Home, a partnership with Queen Mary, University of London and an international hub for research on the home, past, present and future. Biography

Early life and education

Solicari was born in London to Italian parents and grew up in Enfield, north London where she attended Galliard Primary School and Bishop Stopford's School. [7] [3]

Solicari completed her undergraduate studies in English Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London, followed by postgraduate degrees in Nineteenth-Century Studies at King's College London and Museum Studies at University College London. [7]

Career

Solicari began her career at the Victoria and Albert Museum as assistant curator of paintings and later curator of ceramics and glass. [7] [3] [4]

Previously she was head of the Guildhall Art Gallery in the City of London. [8] [6] Here she curated the exhibition Victoriana: The Art of Revival in 2013.

Museum of the Home

In 2017, Solicari became Director of the Museum of the Home (formerly the Geffrye Museum of the Home) in Hoxton, east London. She succeeded David Dewing who had run the Museum for 25 years. [2]

As Director of the museum, Solicari has overseen an £18.6 million capital development project [9] to expand and transform the site. The restoration of the Grade I Listed museum buildings was overseen by architects Wright & Wright who created 80% more space for events, collections and exhibitions. [10]

Solicari also oversaw the rebranding of the museum, with the name changed to the Museum of the Home to better reflect the collections and to reflect the changes over time in the museum's focus. [11]

With Alison Blunt, Solicari is co-director of the Centre for Studies of Home, a collaboration with Queen Mary, University of London. [12]

Dame Sonia Dawn Boyce is a British Afro-Caribbean artist and educator, living and working in London. She is a Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts London. Boyce's research interests explore art as a social practice and the critical and contextual debates that arise from this area of study. Boyce has been closely collaborating with other artists since 1990 with a focus on collaborative work, frequently involving improvisation and unplanned performative actions on the part of her collaborators. Boyce's work involves a variety of media, such as drawing, print, photography, video, and sound. Her art explores "the relationship between sound and memory, the dynamics of space, and incorporating the spectator". To date, Boyce has taught Fine Art studio practice for more than 30 years in several art colleges across the UK.

Mary Beale was an English portrait painter. She was part of a small band of female professional artists working in London. Beale became the main financial provider for her family through her professional work – a career she maintained from 1670/71 to the 1690s. Beale was also a writer, whose prose Discourse on Friendship of 1666 presents scholarly, uniquely female take on the subject. Her 1663 manuscript Observations, on the materials and techniques employed "in her painting of Apricots", though not printed, is the earliest known instructional text in English written by a female painter. Kristin Hjellegjerde is a curator and gallerist, born in Minnesund, Norway and now based in London.

Molly Harrison was an English museum curator and author who was curator of the Geffrye Museum from 1941 to 1969. She added the museum's first modern room in her belief history did not end at the Victorian era and came up with hand-written and illustrated information items. Harrison was an extensive publisher of children's and adult books and frequently gave lectures at universities in the United Kingdom and abroad. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1967 and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts a year later.
