Elk Horn is a city in Shelby County, Iowa, United States. The population was 662 at the 2010 census. Elk Horn is known as an enclave of Danish ethnicity and is home to the Museum of Danish America.

Joseph LaFlesche, also known as E-sta-mah-za or Iron Eye (1822–1888), was the last recognized head chief of the Omaha tribe of Native Americans who was selected according to the traditional tribal rituals. The head chief Big Elk had adopted LaFlesche as an adult into the Omaha and designated him in 1843 as his successor. LaFlesche was of Ponca and French Canadian ancestry; he became a chief in 1853, after Big Elk's death. An 1889 account said that he had been the only chief among the Omaha to have known European ancestry.

Iowa Highway 173 (Iowa 173) is a 14-mile-long (23 km) state highway in western Iowa. It begins at Iowa 83 northwest of Atlantic and ends at Iowa 44 in Kimballton. Iowa 173 connects Elk Horn and Kimballton, two small towns with tributes to their residents' Danish heritage. From its intersection with Interstate 80 (I-80) north to Iowa 44, Iowa 173 is designated as part of the Western Skies Scenic Byway. Designated in 1930, the highway was originally a spur route into Elk Horn from Kimballton. The route was lengthened to its current extent in 1980.

The Chris Larsen House is a historic residence located in Elk Horn, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. The historic importance of the house is its association with Danish immigration into Shelby and Audubon counties from 1865 to 1924. It is also the best example in the area of the frame, gabled double-pile house type. It follows a basic foursquare plan with a broad eavefront gabled roof with a broad central gabled dormer, and symmetrical fenestration on the facade. This type of house construction was popular in the local Danish immigrant community from the 1890s into the 1910s. Chris Larsen, who had this house built in 1908, was a local merchant who immigrated to the United States in 1890. He and his wife Amanda had three children, and they had several boarders living with them as well.
