Sonoran News is a community newspaper in Cave Creek, Arizona, United States. [1] With a circulation of over 37,000, [2] it is the most widely read community newspaper in Maricopa County. [1] It is distributed in Cave Creek, Carefree, Scottsdale, north Phoenix and Desert Hills. It is considered a conservative values newspaper, [3] [4] and bills itself as "Your community partner" [5]

In 2010, an extreme downturn in the economy pushed the formerly weekly newspaper to a twice-monthly publishing schedule. [5]

In 2021 founder and publisher, Donald Sorchych passed away. In 2022 Sonoran Sky Enterprises, LLC purchased the assets, IP, and trade name from the Sorchych estate and continued publishing using the existing name Sonoran News. Sonoran News did not miss publishing a single issue after Mr. Sorchych's passing and through the transition to new ownership.

Controversies

In 2002, the former publisher of Sonoran News Donald Sorchych was accused of cybersquatting on the domain of a rival newspaper to reduce its findability. [6]

In 2009, Sonoran News successfully defended itself against a libel lawsuit from rival paper The Desert Advocate, [7] which the Sonoran News had referred to as the "Deadbeat Advocate", citing the owner's non-payment of back taxes. [8]

Deer Valley Unified School District #97 (DVUSD) is a Pre-K–12 school district, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. DVUSD is the fifth largest school district in the state of Arizona, serving areas of Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria, Anthem, New River and numerous unincorporated areas of northwest Maricopa County. Situated within the Sonoran Desert, the District has grown from its modest beginnings as a county accommodation school located in New River in 1934 to 37 campuses serving 36,261 students: 15 K–6 elementary schools, 13 K–8 schools, three middle schools, and five comprehensive high schools, plus an online school and an alternative school. Early childhood education opportunities are offered through DVUSD Community Education Preschool/PreKindergarten, and Head Start. Twelve schools receive Title I funding. Russell Keith Pearce was an American politician who was a Republican (GOP) member of the Arizona State Senate. He rose to national prominence as the primary sponsor of Arizona SB1070, a controversial anti-illegal immigrant measure that was signed into law in 2010. He was elected President of the Arizona Senate when the Senate began its January 2011 term but then suffered a dramatic reversal of fortune when he was ousted in a November 2011 recall election, the first legislator in Arizona history to be so removed from office. He served as Vice-Chair of the Arizona GOP, but he resigned the position in September 2014 after controversy over a eugenicist comment about forced sterilization of poor women on Medicaid. His politics were widely described as far-right.

Grace Voss Frederick was an American actress on the Broadway stage and on television when it was still an experimental medium. During the Great Depression, Voss shifted to photography to earn a living. She became a well-known portrait photographer and her work was featured in magazines like Life and Look. She transitioned from portraiture to television background and set designs in 1953 together with her husband Claude Frederick. Their work was shown on popular television shows of the period and featured in several movies. Because of the limits of technology, she invented a machine, known as the "Threeplex", which allowed still background photographs to simulate moving or time effects. The machine was donated to Brigham Young University after the couple's retirement.

The Cave Creek Unified School District is the school district serving Cave Creek and Carefree, Arizona, as well as the northern portion of Scottsdale and a sliver of eastern Phoenix. It operates one high school, one middle school, and five elementary schools. A second middle school, Desert Arroyo, was closed in May 2010.
